I’m going to buy my first Apple iPad – is there any thing that I should know ?.

If you aren’t going to really be taking it out of the house apart from if you are going on holiday then I would just get the 64gb normal ipad for around 11800bht . I don’t think there is that much of a difference from the iPad and the iPad Air on the newest model from what I remember reading apart from price.

If you look at the review video I posted you will know that there are very significant differences between the iPad 9 and iPad Air 4, I won’t bother to repeat the information covered in the video as there are just too many.

I will not suggest which is the best model of the OP as I don’t have anywhere near enough information. My choice is personal to me, however the iPad Pro 11” is probably the most future proof of any available.

Here you can learn from the top Apple specialist why you shouldn't buy Apple.

He is hardly the top Apple specialist.

He is a competent to excellent repair technician and runs a reasonably successful company. He also runs a successful YouTube channel. There are technicians who are more capable in some areas than he is.

I just purchase an Apple iPad for my son to use for school. The only suggestion I have is make sure you purchase "Apple Care", too. I was glad I did.

Extended warranties are mostly not worth it - a substantial almost20 - 25% of the cost for a couple of years?? . The money I’ve saved from NEVER buying these warranties has saved me substantially more than I’ve ever forked out on repairs

Buy 9th generation about 11000 baht , the iPad Air is not any better and with the money you save in 4/5 years buy a new one , unless it’s for business use , I’ve got both and I can’t notice the difference

They are overpriced.

They are liable to break and need repairs after a few months.

But you will have the trendy apply symbol on it and be in fashion.

Same with an iPhone. It's a status Symbol...........their owners think????

Can you quote ANY substantiation of that. I’m calling nonsense on that

Maybe the poster has experience in having the battery stats used against him, but its quite safe to keep it plugged into a USB charger - I have a base model iPad fixed on a monitor arm on my desk for 3 years, its permanently charging without any negative effects.

The air is more comfortable to hold, I found the basic iPads weighing down on my wrists especially when holding in portrait mode due to its thickness and weight, its also a lot faster than the base model, there's a different processor inside. Is it worth the extra 9000THB? Prolly not, but it's worth going and test driving them to see the difference.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with my 12.9 inch ipad pro. It’s a fantastic bit of kit, and I use it for a couple of hours each day. Everything just seems to work better than on other tablets, and the foreign language keyboard’s brilliant if you’re learning Thai. If you can afford it, I’d highly recommend the bigger screen.

The hate part I have is that the iOS operating system doesn’t display a simple tree of folders and files like Windows, and each of your files is tied to a particular App. This can make doing a simple file transfer from a PC a nightmare for a computer illiterate such as myself. You’re supposed to be able to transfer files using iTunes, but I could never work out how to do it, and have had to use third party software. By contrast, an android tablet I had many years ago just appeared as another hard drive when connected to my PC, and I could just drag and drop files onto it.

Even so, I’ve used my iPad way more than my Microsoft Surface Pro. Back in the days when I could travel, I took the Windows tablet as a back-up, as I found that just occasionally I needed the power of a full-on PC operating system to do something, rather than iOS.

To optimize longevity, I believe most batteries prefer not to be topped off 100% or kept on a charger. And they don't like to go all the way to 0% either.

Batteries are most comfortable at rest around 60% charge and kept cool I heard from the RC guys some years ago. New battery technology may be different. I don't know.

I’ve used IPad for 19+ years with no issues. iTunes can be annoying at least

for me .. so music I listen on YouTube...

if you opt for extended warranty make sure to read it and ask questions.

Reason: I have an IPhone I dropped and screen broke. .. the store I bought

from said screen replaced at NC within 1 year at AppleCare.

Went to AppleCare and because frame was damaged (corner) unable to replace

for NC and offered X baht to replace screen. Had the screen replaced by

local phone shop...

Before retirement I used for work many years of extensive travel. Saved the shoulder

from toting laptop. IPad has Numbers instead of Excel but you can easily export or save

as excel if recipient doesn’t use Numbers.

Enjoy

Step 1; save to iCloud in a folder of your choice.

Step 2; login to iCloud using your computer of choice.

Step 3; download the file from iCloud

NOTE. you have 5Gb of free storage with your Apple ID

No, just personal experience. My iPhone stopped working about 8 months after I bought it. One of the first things the rep did was check on my charging history. They can easily see it. I really don't care if you believe me or not. Just relating my personal experience. Don't feel obligated to provide you proof. Would you have proof regarding what an Apple rep told you over the phone? You sound a bit looney but that's only MHO.

Thanks for that, as I said, I’m a computer illiterate. Yes, I was aware of the “Files” feature that I think has been improved with newer versions of iOS. It’s still not really the same as on Windows though. I can’t see any of the files I have in “Books” or “Photos”, and I can’t copy/paste files between apps.

I’ve not set up iCloud on my PC, so I’ll try that. After using third party software to transfer files, which has been a bit hit and miss, I bought an iExpand drive to do copies, but the process is still a lot more convoluted than with Windows, and I’m never quite sure what’s actually happening.

Despite my problems, I have become an Apple fanboy, and would now never be without an iPad.

No,you can easily inform yourself by googling it - you have to be a loony/retarded not too …

I'd like to know what impressed you the most. I often hear about apple products being superior, but never hear the reason why. What was impressive about it?

We already heard from one poster that he's been using it as hotspot and it's super reliable. Anything else?

I have an iPad 12.9"; very happy with it EXCEPT the keyboard which is built into the protective cover. I had that changed three or four times; always on warranty but I had to see the dealer, wait a week for the "verdict" and then was given a new keyboard.

Once the iPad was out of warranty = no more keyboard replacement although the last keyboard was less than two months old.

Would I buy another iPad = NO. Reason is, that I prefer a keyboard (I manage ten-finger typing at quite a speed) and feel like a lame duck without! Go for a MacBook Air - if a keyboard is of relevance. Apart from that, iPad is perfect!

Neophyte rather than illiterate.

All computer systems work in a different way and I am thankful that it doesn’t work the same way as windows.

You see those in the apps them selves.

You may not have found the way however it is there. You need to use the “share” function for an app or to copy

this is an example of using the share function in Photos, one of the options is to copy, you can then paste the copied item into a document that will accept it.
Is it the same as Windows, Mac, Linux? No, but then all of those systems must have a keyboard to function iOS must work with no permanent keyboard so it can’t work in the same way. Quite possibly if there is a keyboard attached there are other ways for it to work.

You do not need to setup iCloud on your PC. You just use a browser of choice on your PC to login to iCloud

For your use the Magic Keyboard is what you need not the Smart Keyboard Folio.

which one did you get?

Tried your suggestion, but I did need to install iCloud on my PC, which I did easily enough. No good for Books app, as it doesn’t show up. Copied a couple of test files from the PC to Downloads and Numbers folders (in formats readable by an iPad), can see on iCloud on the PC but not on iCloud on the iPad.

I’m sure it can be easily done, but don’t worry, I’m not asking for step by step instructions. I’m just making the point that for an expert such as yourself, transferring files from PC to iPad might be simple, but it’s a process that I will continue to dread, and should be one factor in a non-expert’s decision on whether to purchase an iPad, Android or Windows tablet (my vote’s still for the iPad, as it’s so brilliant in every other way).

You didn’t ask but it’s trivially easy.

On your iPad open safari (other browsers are available), go to iCloud.com

Login using your AppleID and password

I just setup iCloud on a spare PC.

When you setup iCloud on your PC, you will see "iCloud" drive on the left hand side of a windows explorer panel.

Load your books into there or create a folder for books.

Then go to files on your iPad and open up the book, it will open the books app - You can also download the file to your device to view offline.

I forget if it automatically loads all the books that are in the iCloud Drive, but for sure you can use the files app to read them.

OK, thanks for that, it worked! I was looking at iCloud from the Files app on my iPad, not the website. Now I can transfer my daily updated Finances spreadsheet from the PC more regularly now that it’s a lot easier.

I don’t see the iCloud drive to the left of the windows explorer panel, only Dropbox and One Drive.

However, I logged into iCloud from the PCs Start menu, and created a Books folder as you suggested, and transferred a couple of epubs. It worked! I can now read them on the iPad.

Thanks for going to the trouble of setting iCloud up on your spare PC, this will save me heaps of time in future.

I didn't see it immediately either, but that's exactly where the icon is, under dropbox and one drive, I had to restart the computer and then I signed in to my account before the iCloud Drive started populating with folders.

You can access the iCloud app clicking an icon in your "tray" or whatever those little icons are in the popup menu in the bottom right if the taskbar.
