Daily News went to investigate after a TikTok post showed a ramp intended for use by the handicapped leading to a special toilet that looked rather difficult to climb.

The media said it would be tiring....

They discovered that it was at a gas station on Route 36 near the Pong sub-district intersection leading into Pattaya.

Staff assured the media that it was built out of concern for the handicapped and the aged to stop them falling.

Meanwhile TikTokkers had a field day commenting on what to many seemed more of an obstacle course than a convenience leading to the conveniences.

  • I appreciate that they have concerns for handicapped people, however, wouldn't it have been simpler and cheaper to just build a new toilet on the ground floor?

  • It would be "too late" ,if you were handicapped and in a hurry to get to the toilet..... regards worgeordie

  • First thoughts are your way , but maybe the drainage would become a problem if the toilet was located at ground level . However the cost involved with the ramp would outweigh the cost of a sewer pump

They should provide free motorised wheelchairs for the handicapped users.

Lots of expensive cement.

Probably collapse after a year or two.

There has been an invention called a "lift."  There is even a specialty "lift" developed exactly for occasions such as this open and capable of holding one wheel chair occupant.

i would offer it most likely more economical and certainly not as monumental effort required to install as the current "ramp."

Did anyone consider to compare the price for an electric lift with all the costs payed for making this joke?

Looks like a skateboarder's dream slalom challenge.

Take a look at the ramp to enter immigration in Jomtien.... so steep it would take a few guys to pull a wheelchair up.

If you were caught a bit short I think floor two could get a tad messy.

Adult diapers anyone ????

And Hua Hin.......

Bad enough not being handicapped!

Obviously no consultation with any disabilities advocates .

Even the term handicapped being used remains a worry.

Is there a difference between handicapped and disabled?

The terms handicap and disability are often used interchangeably; however, they have distinctly different meanings, particularly when used by the medical community. Disability describes the mental or physical limitation a person has, and handicap refers to the disadvantage they experiences because of it.

But where is the piece of cheese?

Just tell disabled people, no wheelchair access. They will use the next rest stop. They are used to being messed around, but this must take the biscuit.

They would soon breakdown due to lack of maintenance.????

If only they had had one of these at COP26.

The owners should be made to pay for a full-time wheelchair pusher.  ????

What may not be apparent to non-wheelchair users is the long ramps are also dangerous for coming down. If one lost control of the wheel chair coming down you could end up in a mess at the bottom of the ramp.

Funnily enough the budget actually covered that.

The amount of concrete for the ramp alone could have build 4 toilets on the ground floor.

Correct, going downhill, as a runner or a biker or a wheelchair user can be risky. I have done all three.

I spent a few months in a wheelchair after breaking a leg back in Udon Thani, so I know from experience that I would not be tempted to take that one on. Up or down, especially down.

Same with a lift, would be out of service for weeks at a time.  Just like motorized stairs in Malaysia.

Especially if having a "coming together" at the hairpin with an upwardly mobile user!

The only person i have seen in a wheelchair in Pattaya was a farang.

Might that be because many disabled locals cannot afford a chair, or are kept at home due to  stigma attached to disabilities?
