There is oil everywhere.

Living in a country is different from working there , especially bouncing about on a offshore oil rig

Simon 43, Northern Cyprus sounds an interesting one I will be looking into it as a plan B if things here become impractical.

Depends a lot if there's much liveable, serviced accommodation at Thailand rates and if long stay visas are available. The answer is probably no but it's worth a look.

A seasoned traveler also, as used the hell out of those flight bennys when working for 4 different airlines.

Offshore working, It's a little different.

Working offshore we get work permits, our company pay local taxes. We do fly in and out, staying the day before chopper to the rig the next day. Saying that, we do live locally on land at times, often attending training courses, which can be days or weeks.

We work with the locals get to know their culture, their beliefs and their ways of life, this can be very rewarding and educational as the rig may work in the country for many years.
I've been very lucky to have worked offshore in many countries.

Born Sydney, lived Australia 30 plus years
Thailand 20 plus years most of which I was working offshore, rotation 28/28.
I've always worked on a rotation, at times not always working on the rig but in the office or shipyard.

Resident
Singapore, Redwood apartments
Malaysia, Suasana condominium
South Korea, Sunshine apartments
This work was difficult, working onshore had its issues, drinking in the bars each night after work, then having to work the next day.

Working offshore is a healthier lifestyle, no alcohol on the rig.
Worked offshore Thailand, also
Vietnam
Malaysia
India
Indonesia
Philippines
Angola
Nigeria
Saudi Arabia
Mexico
Brazil

About five US states (three CA counties) and WDC.

USA, Thailand, Cambodia, Korea, Indonesia. I settled in Philippines with idea of staying but bailed on that dumpster fire. Cumulative time / years in Mexico, India.

Working offshore is a little different ? Give me a break.

You remind me of the servicemen that think they deserve better acknowledgment than the usual tax payer . Freedom of choice is the name of the game

Sorry if I offended you.

I'd like you to talk to my mate

Elon Musk

He'll give you a lesson on how the tax system works.

You don't offend me at all .

The post asked where you have lived . You want to quote where you have worked in the world .

Rural Essex man, done a year in Germany, all I can remember is

studying German beer a Blackforest gateau, never got used to

driving on the wrong side of the road and upsetting German drivers.

But left Germany with no small regret and great affinity for the

German folk and all things German.

By quirk of fate '98 found myself Pattaya, bigger quirk, found I was

married to a Thai, am now skint.   Lifes tatty tapestry.

But its been fun.
