The head of the Phuket Tourism Business Association pointed to a relatively rosy December for the holiday island but a doubtful new year as Omicron fears in Europe bite.

Phoomkit Raktaengaan told the business media that hotel bookings were up 60% in December.

80,000 foreign tourists were expected and Thai domestic tourists would swell this number to 300,000.

Russians in particular were coming with one flight from Moscow - a 400 seat 777 - having 397 or 398 passengers.

Kazakhs were also coming in good numbers.

But new year booking figures showed a slowdown with British and German people in particular adopting a wait and see approach amid concerns about the Omicron virus at home and abroad.
