Exactly.

Thailand doesn't need tourism.  It hasn't had any for nearly 2 years and everyone seems to be ok.

How many people do you see starving now in Thailand?  What's the unemployment rate, something like 2%?  Do you see a shortage of luxury cars on the streets of Bangkok? Still loads of traffic, seems like people can afford petrol?  How about smart phones? Everyone still has them?

Thais aren't suffering like everyone claims.  The economy has pulled back a bit, but the Thais have been so spoiled for so long!

An economy which is so reliant on Tourism definitely needs tourist - your comment that Thailand doesn’t is simply uneducated and flawed... the Tourism knock on effect in Thailand is significant as filter-down work as a result of tourism far exceeds the 20% GDP quoted.

The unemployment stats you posted are also pure fiction and reflect ‘official numbers’ of those registered to the social security system.

Thailand most defiantly does need tourism, however, the article accurately points out that the impact on preventing the arrival a couple of thousand tourists over the next couple of weeks is minimal in comparison to the as yet unknown risk of an Omicron outbreak in Thailand.

Regarding the unemployment rate.....  travel to any area which has been reliant on tourism and see the utter devastation, rows and rows of shops abandoned. Travel to any town and see areas where businesses were open are not shuttered - each and every one of these businesses employed a handful of people or more.

We don’t see people on the streets, they have all gone back to their home areas and are sitting in homes of extended family, living hand to mouth, scrounging and scraping by....

You use some very flawed analogies: Those who have ‘middle class’ jobs are hardly effected, and those who have been can still afford their cars and petrol. Luxury cars?? I don’t think you thought very much at all before posting that comment... the wealthy are still wealthy !!!...

I didn't go to Thailand now for 2y , but i hear from the Thai family that all in the Isaan village close to Udon , that all is pretty much normal there . There aren't particular more people there , no scrounging and scraping for food , Besides the masks and sometimes closure of local market , nothing else then 2y ago . People still grow rice , they still eat , have a few bottles of drinks , all like 2y ago . In heavy tourism areas , yes , there is a lot of problems there , i agree , but in general for most people on this planet life has gone by , with less travel , less eating and drinking in bars , less "entertainment venues" , but for the rest all fine . Checking back 10y , there was 1 max 2 cars in town , now near all homes got a car . samlors which were all around 10y ago , now pretty much rare sight .

Is the 20% of GDP nothing , no not at all , it is a big chunk and it hurts Thailand but for people outside of the tourism industry , not much has changed .
