Cameras capture nine rare wild animals in Cardamom Mountains

A wildlife tracking project has proved that a number of rare wild animals still exist in the Kingdom’s Cardamom Mountains, described by an activist as the outcome of the decline in poaching. According to a statement issued by the Environment Ministry on Friday, these species include Asian elephants, wild gaur, sambar deer, mountain goats, red muntjacs, boars, clouded leopards, bears, peccaries, pangolin, wild dogs and so on.

 

 

Their existence has been confirmed by photos taken from February 10 to February 17 by over 50 camera traps installed in various parts in the protected areas of Kong Kong, Kampong Speu and Pursat provinces as well as the findings of their feces and footprints in the forest.

 

The ministry added that tracking was supported by the “Sustainable Landscape and Sustainable Tourism Project” in collaboration with Department of Conservation of the south Tonle Sap Conservation Area for the purpose of increase collection of biodiversity data through camera trapping. It added that the 53 cameras traps deployed in 52 provincial locations included 20 in Pursat, 23 in Koh Kong, and 10 in Kampong Speu.
