Hua Hin Municipality holds child drowning prevention training project

Hua Hin Municipality has held a training seminar aimed preventing incidents of drowning among children.

 

Hua Hin Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul formally opened the Child Drowning Prevention Project, which gave training to more than 50 people on what to do in the event a child gets into difficulty while in water.

 

The seminar, which was organised by by Mr. Theeraphan Jadpol, the General Director of the Department of Public Health and Environment in Hua Hin Municipality was attended by beach operators, sea protection volunteers club, municipal officials, teachers, and staff of the Takiab Child Development Center, and a group of local parents.

 

The seminar included training from members of the Sawang Hua Hin Foundation and officers from the Royal Thai Army Sergeant School who gave lectures and demonstrations on water safety.

Teach kids how to swim that will be more effective than what to do if a kid is drowning or get is in difficulty when in the water

Agreed, but no harm in teaching public responders what to do in the first critical seconds of a rescue.

Before trained rescue services arrive.

While i'll agree teaching kids to swim is a priority, that does not help when a kid is in difficulty, unless parents can swim and know how to rescue someone. 

True story; about 15 yrs ago, i was swimming in the sea and was noticing a strong rip starting i managed to get back in on a wave just, i then noticed a young girl about 8yr old, struggling to come back in, her eyes said it all, I was stood waist deep, and she was only about 6m away from me, but i knew if i went back out, we could both drown, although i had made the decision if she went under i would risk all, but timing the waves which were stronger receding than coming in was not easy,  she kept eye contact with me the whole time, suddenly 4 Thai men just rushed out to save her, now they too were in big trouble, eventually i managed to signal to them to grip hands and on the next big wave i dragged all 5 to safety, the 4 men dropped the girl, and went back to the beach exhausted, i carried the girl back to a round of applause when really i had done nothing, laid her down and felt she was still breathing, i held her until she came round. whew i've got tears in my eyes now. The next day she ran up the beach and gave me a wai. . Now i'm really crying.

Later that day I called out to some tourists swimming and waved them in, i explained what had happened they didn't go back in.

 If they want to teach ,They need some CPR dummies for people to practice on, not an AED to show off. adult ones cost around 4k baht.

You did a really good thing,action when needed.I had something very similar but in a lake

I was just walking in the water about waist deep and suddenly people started yelling,i looked up and saw people pointing at me,in a reflex i felt around me in the water and i felt a small body.

Pulled up a four year old girl,she was ok but a few seconds can make all of the difference.

Even for strong swimmers (I am one - my whole life, they started teaching me at school when I was 5, they had various stages of performance certificates they whipped us through) swimming in the sea even close to shore is a different kettle of fish to a pool. Further out on the ocean it's a different universe.

This is a great initiative focussed on those most likely to be around when something goes wrong. High fives for authorities getting something right.

But there's no substitute for teaching kids to swim, and then pushing them for a bit of achievement. It helps make them viscerally aware of the dangers as well.
