My wife has a seven year old son who she loves but she is going to leave with her parents and familly if she gets her visa. Idealy for her she would like to visit him twice a year and look to bring him over in three to four years. Is any of this likely to count against her at her interview will they think how can a mother leave her child and that she will try to bring him over as soon as possible in other words will they think she is less than honest, which I know is the worst thing possible. This is the plan for me also he's a great little lad but we need to establish our way of life before he comes over. Although leaving him will be a bit hard for her I don't think it will be a massive problem as she has worked away from home for long periods, as long as she gets to see him at least once and preferably twice a year, which won't be a serious problem financially. The problem is how will the interviewer look at this, is it a thing that happens quite often doe's a child work against your chances of a visa?

That your wife has a child by a previous relationship who is to stay in Thailand is irrelevant to her visa application. Likewise, a provision exists in the Immigration Rules for your step-child to subsequently join his mother in the UK, so that this is the ultimate intention can't be held against her either.

I would think that probably 70% (if not more) of Thai ladies who apply for settlement visas for the UK have at least one child by a previous relationship, and they've (largely) successfully obtained their visas, so I don't think your wife will be any different.

Thanks Scouse,

I want her to be prepared for the interogation because I want her to be 100% honest at her interview, I don't want her to try to put any sort of spin on her answers because I've found Thai's often give you the answer they think you want to hear, they are trying to be polite but in the interview situation it can be a disaster. There is probably few other situations where the saying honesty is the best policy is more relevant.

No problems for you ensure you name the child on all applications etc and when you are ready just apply for a settlement visa you must include the following: proof of support/contact i have just done it two days later no interview reqd colect her visa.

hi mate,

you have been given some good guidelines already but just to add one thing that seem insignificant now but can come back to haunt you later, if you intend for her son to join you at a later date make sure before your wife migrates she has obtained either divorce papers listing custody of the child to her if she was in a registered marriage or obtain a por kor 14 ( like a stat dec about previous relationship and who is looking after child )from the local amphur (local registery office) if she was not in a registered marriage as you will need these document when you apply for the son to join you and it can be rather inconvienient to obtain when you are several thousand miles/km away. These document are not required now but you will need them in the future

best of luck mate.
