INN published a heart wrenching picture related to yet another drowning of a young child in Nakhon Ratchasima or Korat in central Thailand.

It was some red and white striped flip-flops left casually by a pond in a rice field in Sikhio district.

They belonged to a seven year old boy who relatives said was autistic and like to play alone.

It appeared from the INN report that the boy could in fact swim.

Police suspected that he went for a swim in the hot weather, discarded his footwear and clothes and then probably suffered an attack of cramp and was unable to get out of the pond.

It happened in Ban Non Rang.

Drowning deaths and fatalities on motorcycles are the two leading causes of death in young children, notes ASEAN NOW.

Both fully preventable with education....

IF schools were directed to teach water safety and road safety from to children from an early age a lot of these tragic events may be avoided.

The key issues remain obvious.... Those in positions of decision making power simply do not care enough because these issues do not impact them.

Until these issues impact those in positions of decision making power either finacially or through the medial directly embarrassing them, nothing will be done. Unfortunately the ‘media’ aspect is temporary and only leads to crackdowns.... So its money then, but and those in positions of power will never do anything which impacts their ‘income streams’ so the same underlying disinterest continues.

Accidents happen and nothing is really "fully" preventable as much as I'd like that to be true, but yeah, education goes a loooooong way!

Thailand has a different set of priorities than the west... get used to it and the daily deaths won't come as so much of a surprise.
