Nearly 200 transiting Afghan refugees in Cambodia

Nearly 200 Afghan asylum seekers are in Cambodia after the government agreed to accept them on humanitarian grounds. According to the Department of Immigration Task Force spokesman Major General Chung Ravuth, the Cambodian government has agreed to accept 300 Afghan asylum seekers. He said 200 of them have arrived and they are preparing to go to a third country.

 

He added that the asylum seekers came in the last few months in batches of up to 12 people and they are staying in Phnom Penh temporarily before traveling to a third country. They were received on Humanitarian grounds as per the government decision, said Ravuth. He added the government will look into the welfare, safety and needs of the refugees while in Cambodia and make sure they are comfortable during their temporary stay.

 

“We welcome the refugees as decided by the government in August,” said Maj Gen Ravuth. Interior Ministry spokesman General Khieu Sopheak said, “The government is ready to receive those refugees. It’s like we used to receive Rohingya refugees.”
