The Danish expats have been checked last year, if they have paid taxes at home of their income; we needed to show proof for that. The tax-man - actually a pair of polite women - said that also Finish residents were checked, and that was the beginning of checking up on, if foreigners had paid their income tax abroad.

It might be depending of the individual Double Taxation Agrements, some says that for example "retirement pensions can be taxed in both states".

Thx for your post! The Dansih were checked by danish tax authorities? pls elaborate what went on. Thanks!

  • It is 6 months per calendar year. But Thailand do not enforce income taxes for those retired and in some cases there is a joint agreement between Thailand and other countries exempting it.

  • Its a muddy situation which thankfully Thailand is not bothering with at the moment. Just explain to your bank that you are in Thailand and authorities do not issue TINs to retirees (actually you can

No, checked by Thai tax authorities. The Danish tax-system is very strict and knows almost all - even Big Brother would envy a surveillance like that on citizens - we were checked it taxes were paid at home, presumably to also check if there would be something left to be taxed in Thailand; bear in mind Double Taxation Agreement, and what can be taxed by the other state, or by both states.

I would love to pay income tax in Thailand; of course instead of Denmark... In my case the two polite women were amazed of how much tax I had paid in Denmark. Other Danes have told and posted same reaction, when they showed proof on paid income tax - unfortunately not much left for others to tax...???? - don't forget that Denmark is number one in the whole World when it comes to high taxation, amazing that the taxation-rate didn't caused a revolution long time ago...:whistling:

But at the same time, Denmark is #2 in the World Happiness Rankings.  High taxation, as long as it's equitable and is coupled with good social service provisions, healthcare, education and infrastructure, the people will be disinclined to revolt.
