I’m currently on an ED Visa until late August because I am studying my Masters degree here in Thailand, but I plan to drop out, start teaching and switch to a Non B.

1. Do I HAVE to leave Thailand for this? The school that I’ve interviewed at has a visa agent who suggested I do a visa run.

2. Is it necessary to cancel my ED Visa at immigration? I did this before when changing universities and went from 1 ED Visa to another, but I don’t plan to study in Thailand again.

*most important*

3. Where is it possible to do a visa run/apply for a Non B nowadays? I read that Cambodia takes 5 days now. Is Laos an option? Or anywhere which is less than 5 days. Or just come back on an entry stamp and convert that to a Non B within Thailand? Other suggestions?

I have a South African passport and all necessary documents for a Non B.

Thank you.

You have to travel back to S. Africa to get a visa, info here -

https://phnompenh.thaiembassy.org/en/publicservice/additional-documents-required-for-citizens-from-certain-countries

South Africa is non approved country, if you don't have Cambodian work visa or residency then it will take a month or more to process visa.

Requirements for passport holders of: Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi,
Cabo Verde, Chad, Comoros, Cote d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon,
Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique,
Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania,
    Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Applicants with residency in Cambodia should provide proof of residence, such as Cambodian visas, Cambodian work permit, proof of long-term accommodation, work contract, school/university confirmation of enrolment, immigration stamps showing applicant has been in Cambodia for the majority of the past 6 months etc. Application consideration will take at least 3 working days,

If the applicant is not a resident in Cambodia, the application will be subject to approval from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, which takes at least one month. Therefore, the applicant is advised to apply for a visa at the Thai Embassy or Consulate-General in their home/residence country or at the designated Thai Embassy for faster consideration times. (This requirement may be waived for applicants under 18 years old at the discretion of the consular officer

You can cancel your extension for studying and apply for one for working if the department of employment in your province issues you a work permit approval letter. It might come as a surprise, but in this situation it's not immigration who make problems.

So you should contact the department of employment in your province and ask them if it's possible to apply for a work permit while being on an extension for studying.
