Bangkok and Pattaya officials reminds the public of alcohol sales prohibitions this upcoming election weekend

Can foreigners vote? Must they stay sober so as to make the right choice?

It's probably pretty easy, if the cops see someone having a beer, to guess whether the guy is a Thai citizen who should be studying the policy positions of all the candidates in order to make an informed decision.

Also, since the elections tend to be rigged, would it really matter if every voter was six sheets to the wind?

Bars and restaurants have likely had a tough last two years. To hobble their high margin trade two weekends in a row is not helpful.

As elections are coming this Sunday for Bangkok Governor, the public relations department of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is reminding people what not to do and what could violate the law,

Take money for your vote?

Being able to show a foreign passport should provide exemption from these childish bans. Not so much for expats who are aware of this and can plan ahead, but for tourists who walk into a bar at 7pm expecting a good evening and are told they can't have a beer because Thais are voting. It annoys people and makes the country look backwards and foolish.

Won't affect me at all. As long as they're back open at 6pm on Sunday I'll be having a few cold ones before the Premiership deciders kick off at 10pm ???? .

OK, the booze sale will be higher than normal on Saturday before 6pm; the rest is business as usual. The election outcome is - most likely - also decided already ........ next please!

Is this limited to Bangkok or is it nationwide?

Nationwide, we suffer the same idiocy here in Isaan when the time comes for elections, even though the votes have been paid for in advance.

The people have money in their pockets and perhaps the authorities want them to go and make the votes they paid for, rather than going straight on the razz with it and completely forgetting to go vote.

Any more foolish than being told you can't buy a beer between certain hours in a 7-11 etc?
