Daily News Thai Caption: Numbers revealed

Daily News reported that people armed with joss-sticks and flowers and other "divining devices" were coming from far and wide to pay homage to a roadside kilometer marker.

The apparently powerful marker in Khalameh sub-district of Surin in Thailand's north east has provided the answer to lottery wins on many occasions, it was claimed.

There was a steady stream of the faithful arriving all day to pray for riches.

One of them, Utthorn, 59, said he and his relatives had rented a pick-up to come and get lucky.

He said there were various methods to divine the numbers such as putting numbered ping pong balls in an earthenware jar and drawing them - his preferred method.

He drew 805 for the three numbered one and 54 for the two.

"But really," he explained earnestly, "it's all about how much merit you make".

The next draw is Thursday June 1st next week.

ASEAN NOW notes, somewhat skeptically, that with the amount of stories daily about omens for the lottery, we have just about covered every number by now.

"But really," I explained earnestly, "it's a load of nonsense."

This story could could really gain a lot of mileage if only Thailand hadn't gone metric!

So it depends on how much you pay at the temple on your visit to reduce your criminal efforts in the previous week.

Now I can safely say I've seen it all.

Bow down to the holy road marker

My luck I'd get wiped out by a pick-up.
