BANGKOK (NNT) - The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department (DDPM) has assured the public that its tsunami warning systems are still intact after its tsunami detection buoys had been found displaced from their original locations.

The DDPM clarified the situation following reports that Thailand’s tsunami detection buoys in the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean lost contact with their uplink satellite. The department explained that Indian authorities had since recovered one of the buoys in the Indian Ocean after the department lost contact with it on October 22 of last year. Officials are also recovering a second buoy in the Andaman Sea that they had lost contact with on Thursday (9 June).

The DDPM said both buoys will be replaced with newer ones, with installation to take place in November amid more favorable weather conditions.

The department also assured that its tsunami warning systems remain operational and effective in the absence of the buoys because they focus on data analyzed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which compiles information from various nations. The DDPM is also strictly following all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for tsunami warnings to ensure effective and immediate action when necessary.

They better be doing the maintenance on them to ensure we do not have another disaster like the boxing day disaster that killed many folks and destroyed many businesses and homes in Phuket.  At that time i was living in Chalong, and many of us headed down to assist in the clean-up to help out the places we frequented. Would not wish what happened then to occur now without advanced warning, but then Thailand has never been one to maintain things on a regular basis.

Let's hope they are not supplied by the same company as the bomb detectors !

We spent 6 weeks in Aceh province, Sumatra with SurfAid re-building houses it was horrific after the disaster (because of my surfing connection to the place).

I hadn't been to Phuket for many years prior to the tsunami, visited (about 3 years after I think?).

It was chilling once again to see the same damage memory marks there - the high water marks like in Aceh, boats way up on hillsides etc.

I remember staying at the Hideaway Resort up above south end of Patong and along the road to there was a restaurant owned by a woman who had sheltered a few falang survivors. I visited her and asked her if she was the lady I had heard this story about, we had coffee and cried together about all the lost souls.
