Chiang Mai sets up toilet standards team

CHIANG MAI: -- Responding to a Cabinet call for improved toilet facilities at tourist attractions, Chiang Mai Governor Suwat Tantipat yesterday scheduled a meeting on the issue and assigned a team to set up standards.

Suwat said the province would find ways to resolve the long-standing problem of sub-standard toilets and ultimately set an example for other provinces.

Describing the problem as a serious obstacle to drawing more visitors, Chiang Mai Tourist Business Association president Boonlert Perera said previous attempts to improve restrooms had been foiled by budget constraints.

The Cabinet revived the issue on Tuesday at its mobile meeting in Lamphun.

"Foreign tourists aren't happy about some tourist attractions' toilets that are inconvenient, have insufficient stalls and, most importantly, are so dirty they don't want to use them. It's an embarrassment," Boonlert said.

The problem requires a long-term and organised plan, he said, suggesting that private companies could invest in a dedicated toilet-service business.

The attractions themselves could hire permanent toilet caretakers, he added.

Boonlert said the toilets should be of good standard and have convenient access for all, including the disabled and elderly.

Several models will be proposed, each specifically designed to match a particular tourist site, such as an "antique" style of toilet for historical places.

Senior forestry official Pisal Wasuwanich, who is in charge of building Chiang Mai's night safari park, said he would select a suitable model for his park's toilets to accommodate international tourists.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has flushed Britain's claims to have invented the water closet down the pan with the discovery of a 2,000-year-old toilet complete with running water, a stone seat and a comfortable armrest.

Archaeologists found the antique latrine in the tomb of a king of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC to 24 AD), who believed his soul would need to enjoy human life after death, the official Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday.

"This top-grade stool is the earliest of its kind ever discovered in the world, meaning that the Chinese used the world's earliest water closet which is quite like what we are using today," Xinhua quoted the archaeologists' report as saying.

"It was a great invention and a symbol of social civilization of that time," Xinhua said.

The invention of the flush toilet is widely attributed to London plumber Thomas Crapper, who patented a U-bend siphoning system for flushing the pan in the late 19th century, and who also installed toilets for Queen Victoria.

Among other inventions claimed by China are toilet paper, fireworks, gunpowder, the compass, paper money, kites, printing and the clock.

The toilet tomb was discovered in Shangqiu county in the central province of Henan, Xinhua said.

Archaeologists also found a queen consort's stone tomb, more than 690 feet long and consisting of more than 30 rooms including a bathroom, toilet, kitchen and an ice-store.

Can this job qualify me for a long-term visa?

:o

It certainly will so qualify you once you get to the bottom of the problem.

Too much paper work involved.

The job is a strain but they do give you a stool to sit on.
