The West must prepare to continue supporting Ukraine in a war lasting for years, Nato's chief has warned.

 

Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the costs of war were high, but the price of letting Moscow achieve its military goals was even greater.

 

His comments came as UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson also warned of the need to brace for a longer-term conflict.

 

Both Mr Stoltenberg and Mr Johnson said sending more weapons would make a victory for Ukraine more likely.

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson returned from Ukraine with a warning that ‘we need to steel ourselves for a long war’

 

The new head of the Army has said British troops must prepare “to fight in Europe once again” as the conflict in Ukraine continues.

 

General Sir Patrick Sanders took over from General Sir Mark Carleton Smith on Monday and wrote to his charges about the challenges they face.

 

“There is now a burning imperative to forge an Army capable of fighting alongside our allies and defeating Russia in battle,” Sir Patrick said.

 

“We are the generation that must prepare the Army to fight in Europe once again,” he added.

Retired Russian general Evgeny Buzhinsky has replied to these comments on Russian TV:

"“He (Sanders) doesn’t understand that as a result of the Third World War Britain will physically cease to exist,” Mr Buzhinsky said."

Who himself doesn't understand that the chances of there being any Russian cities left should that happen being somewhere between none and zero.

The Western Nations (Europe and US) should intensify military help by actually delivering weapons to the maximum and they should do it fast. But what they do is considering and delaying and discussing (what they do best) and sending outdated equipment. Of course this is a ride on a knifes edge considering the possibility of any nuclear war.

 

But the alternative would be to let Russia do what they want and actually annex Ukraine while thousands die in the process. They use the nuclear deterrent as the driving force and the West takes on the role of the scared part. And it is not really far fetched that this is then the beginning of a series of similar occurences.

 

The West is showing weakness and lack of determination hoping that the situation will settle to do them no harm. I feel that this is a mistake of historic proportions. We might be steering towards a world of only 3 blocks: US, Russia and China with allies in South America and Africa. And forget democracy. It will be the China Model seasoned with a bit of North Korea. Not a world in which I would like to see my children living in.

He should. But here you apply logic. I hope that this is appropriate in this case. But maybe he is crazy ? And he might not be alone. There were 70 Million voters for "you know who...". Hundreds of Millions smoke (I used to be one of them - a long time ago).....Should not have happened if you look at it from a logical viewpoint.

 

I anticipate a similar problem concerning China / South China Sea / Taiwan. In this case it seems to be quite evident - very unfortunately. And the reason being - against all logic and compassion - exactly what zzaa09 stated above. In his dreams the Chinese Teddybear (thats how he looks to me) has even much more bigger ambitions .......

LOL, do you even know what the Russian and American comparative GDP's are? Russia's GDP is set to contract by 10% in the coming year, and that's the prediction of Russia's own economists. They are also predicting 10 years of economic stagnation.

All countries depend on foreign capital, where do you think Russia's foreign investment will come from? There isn't any, Russia is a financial leper.

Take Russia's aviation industry. It's a big country, with a lot of distance for aircraft to cover. How long do you think the Boeings and Airbuses in Russia will keep flying, when the maintenance crews can't get spare parts and software updates? They'll be cannibalizing aircraft in another three months.

On the battlefield, Russia is losing men and equipment at a rate that puts their war in Afghanistan in deep shade. The troops are demoralized.

You don't just take your aircraft to a local mechanic and get some no-brand parts fitted to it.  Everything that is done to it must be signed off by a manufacturers representative.  Russia may very well keep its Western made planes flying, but when this is all over they will be refused entry to all Western countries, and when it comes time to return the planes to the leasors they will be missing vital paperwork, making them next to worthless without a complete strip down and refit by the manufacturers.  This will make it highly unlikely that anyone will lease aircraft to them again for a long time.  Sure, they could start their own commercial aviation industry, but that would take years to set up, and misses the point of why Russia decided to use Airbus and Boeing planes in the first place, despite the USSR being a large plane maker in its own right. (Hint, they wanted there to be a good chance that flights would take off when they said they would, stay in the air after taking off, and coming down in the place they said it would come down in). - And that's ignoring the lack of software and flight manual upgrades that are routinely delivered to airlines.

An appreciating rouble means it can buy more imports, but selling exports becomes more difficult. Not quite what Russia needs with a shrinking economy.
