The TAT and Tourism and Sports Ministry are now stating that the challenges to international arrivals are out of the control of Thai authorities.

All you need to know from the article, any responsibility is hereby publicly absolved....

For an inexplicable reasons, there is an acute shortage of airport workers, from flight crews to porters and passenger's handling and processing resulting in thousands of flight being cancelled all over the world...

We opened up but they are not coming back in droves.  What's the hold up?

It's the airlines.  Yep, that's the ticket........

There is a shortage because a lot of the airport workers were laid off and found other jobs. Its not like baggage handlers are exactly well paid. If they want more workers in a hurry, they have to pay more to induce them back - which they won't. Supply/demand...

"A statement read “Tourists face higher travel costs, particularly from inflation and airfares, which have increased by 20-40%. The TAT is working with airlines, both scheduled and chartered services, to roll out joint promotions to help offset those costs. However, for Europe’s summer season in August, it might be too late to prepare any stimulus packages.”"

No problem - the Thai government only wants rich tourists anyway... they said so on many occasions.

I think it only happens in high income countries.

People in low income countries work any job for a meal.

Took about an hour to get my bags after landing at Swampy on Friday night, and mine was one of the first off (apart from the crew's luggage).

I didn't see any other baggage carousels in use so it's not like the airport was busy.

I wonder if they could take some conscripts away from gardening duty at the General's mansions and get them to help out?

Inexplicable?  The majority of them got sacked.

higher flight costs due to operating costs caused by rising oil prices and longer flights due to the detours to avoid the war between Russia and Ukraine is resulting in fewer international flights arriving.

The higher prices are almost exclusively due to the world closing its borders for the best part of 2 years due to covid overreaction, causing the near destruction of the airline industry and airlines reacting accordingly by not increasing supply to match demand, but increasing the cost of the flights instead.   Of course they are hesitant to employ and train workers that they had to lay off to meet the current demand as there is no guarantee that the world will not once again overreact and do exactly the same again.

Actions have consequences.   The consequences in this case is that flying has once again become a middle class pursuit and is no longer accessible to everyone.   Get used it as we will be paying for the costs of lockdown for a very, very long time to come.

Furloughed, retrenched, laid off, early retirement but not sacked.

But....but, two days ago highfalutin officials promised us 10 million were coming this year....

and just yesterday, other highfalutin officials all dressed up walked all around the airport making highfalutin promises and plans....

and what about their scheme to change the image of Thailand from cheap Charlie to very highfalutin...?

Guess that's why it's called news....something new everyday.

Airline work - especially those jobs that are “operational” in nature, have long been somewhat “boom-bust” kinds of occupations in that the jobs, salaries and job security tends to be quite high during periods of high demand and robust growth, but can instantly turn south in a big way, and result in massive layoffs etc.

True, this is not something exclusive to the airline universe, but it’s always been there and it’s quite pronounced in the airline industry … and I think during this last C19 downturn, those who were laid off/furloughed/etc just decided that they’d take the opportunity to change careers and move in a different path.

So.. now when they get that recall notice or call from their HR that their job will be reinstated- some are choosing to move on in a wholly different direction.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the same with other industries like hospitality front-line staff and the like..
