China: MI5 and FBI heads warn of ‘immense’ threat

The heads of UK and US security services have made an unprecedented joint appearance to warn of the threat from China.

 

FBI director Christopher Wray said China was the "biggest long-term threat to our economic and national security" and had interfered in politics, including recent elections.

 

MI5 head Ken McCallum said his service had more than doubled its work against Chinese activity in the last three years and would be doubling it again.

Yes, taiwan gdp is 4x larger than ukraine (and similar to gdp of thailand), below 1% of the global economy. "Horrific disruption" in this context is mouthful.

Also title's "immense threat" is meant to confuse with much more colloquial "imminent threat" - rather used here on purpose

The major issue is: are the US and UK even capable of strengthening Taiwan's defense? What sort of deterrence do they have after using up so much of their arsenal in Ukraine? You've got Putin constantly throwing a left jab in Ukraine, while Xi winds up for a right hook knockout blow.

You don't seem to know how IC and high technology industries work and how interdependent the world has become. Destabilizing the world's IC industry would make covid's $6 trillion loss look like a picnic.

 

However, China has one problem. Taiwan's vast IC industry depends far more on Western high technology than on China's.   You might want to start here Reuters:special-report
