The Nation reports that Governor Chamroen Thipphayaphongthada said on Wednesday the local disaster prevention and mitigation office is closely monitoring the earthquake situation in the Andaman Islands and surrounding areas.

A tsunami is about the last thing that Thailand needs.  Sometimes, small quakes relieve pressure on a fault line and help prevent a major quake.  Other times, it can foretell a big one coming.

Stay alert and stay safe.

'Seree advised residents in Phang-nga, Ranong, Krabi, Phuket and Satun to follow the situation closely, because a series of small earthquakes could unleash a big, powerful one and in turn possibly lead to a tsunami.'

Well that's crossed off a few places where I won't be going on holiday.

However, The main news this morning indicated by an interview with some minister who they were discussing it with on the news said it was of no worry as the buoys all were working and indicated no problems.

Here is a screen-grab from the NOAA tsunami buoy website for the Thai buoy in the Andaman Sea.  Note that no data has been received from it since 4th July.  (Maybe it was having a party...)

Also, the headline of this post is somewhat worrying. "Phang Nga draws up tsunami plan - abnormal earthquakes'.  You mean that they don't already have a plan?!!

You would think that since the boxing day Tsunami an annual plan would have been reviewed and added to as roads change buildings grow in areas they were not before. Looks like major comacency which is typical.  Yes I watch the buoy website ever so often.

Just wondering, and somewhere in that plan some strong technology which sends prompt alerts to several agencies if any part of the system has faults and/or has not delivered the data it's there to produce, etc.

And the agency receiving the 'failure' report responsible to take very prompt serious action.

Seems to be too much to ask...

I have been in Thailand long enough to see that inaction before something happens is quite common.  In fact most do not respond or react until after the event, no proactive effort put in at all, only reactionary, which is truly sad and despicable.
