Long journeys can be quite economical, I think it would be wise to consider more walking the very short journeys, 100m to 7/11 etc.

I believe about 55 mph is best, so that is the speed I drive everywhere and don't bother stopping at lights or junctions now.

For a number of years after buying my 3.0 litre Hilux Vigo I kept a check on fuel consumption and it averaged out over a five or so year period of 34.97 mpg and these were real 4.54 litre gallons not the budget US variety.
