Migrants cross the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas

EAGLE PASS, Texas, July 19 (Reuters) - Beneath a blazing sun, a record number of migrants seeking to enter the United States are crossing the Mexican border. Some wade or swim through the waters of the Rio Grande into Texas. Smugglers ferry groups of others on rafts.

U.S. President Joe Biden, a Democrat, promised a more humane border policy than that of his Republican predecessor Donald Trump, but the increase in numbers has challenged U.S. law enforcement and drawn criticism from both political parties.

The U.S. Border Patrol made more than 1.6 million arrests through June in the fiscal year that started on Oct. 1, on pace to exceed the 1.7 million arrests during all of the last fiscal year, U.S. government data shows.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California will become the first state to guarantee free health care for all low-income immigrants living in the country illegally, a move that will provide coverage for an additional 764,000 people at an eventual cost of about $2.7 billion a year.

The term immigrant sure is taking on a new meaning.

The term immigrant sure is taking on a new meaning.

Undocumented immigrants have along history of contributing to the economy of California and it is California that will pay for this.

There are no new meanings to the term ‘immigrant’.

Please go back and tell me which term best describes a person who enters illegally.

Why should I do that, rightwing semantics is not the topic of discussion.

The American Dream.

But it doesn’t work out for everyone.

Would they (the ones in tents) be able (and willing) to serve the country?

I'd say that's a big yes:

Since the Revolutionary War, immigrants have been a vital part of the United States military. In fact each year about 8,000 non-citizens enlist in the U.S. armed forces. According to the U.S. Defense Department, there are currently 30,000-plus non-citizens serving on active duty.

And why is it that those who go there to live get some sort of work while the American citizens live in tent cities?  Perhaps you should visit the encampments and get your answers first hand.

I agree. What he will learn is what we already know and that is that if American employers didn't employ these illegal immigrants then there wouldn't be an illegal immigrant problem.

The real cause of the problem is that employers are rarely charged, fined or jailed for employing illegal immigrants.

It should be easy. In Australia, the fine is tens of thousands of dollars per person employed. Continued employment of non citizens is not possible.

The problem? Those illegal immigrants are needed by American employers. Those tomatoes ain't gonna pick themselves. Southern farmers have been employing illegal immigrants with impunity since the get go.

[1940's] The government turned a blind eye to Texans’ employment of these undocumented immigrants, even after hiring undocumented workers was declared illegal.

despite the best efforts of the United States and Mexico during Operation Wetback, many workers simply returned to the United States again and again.

Undocumented farm workers make up approximately 50% of the farm labor workforce.

The constant conflating of immigrants (who enter a country legally and at that country's invitation) and illegal aliens (who are criminals) makes it hard to discuss this issue properly.

Nobody is against controlled immigration. People ARE against uncontrolled, unvetted, and uninvited people crashing the border.

Typical California- provide services for non-citizens that legal residents have to pay for.

The services California provides are paid for by the taxes paid by people residing in California, very many of whom are undocumented immigrants.

Alot of truth, back in the day the men came to US to pick the crops and send the money back to their families South of the border. In Ca. I worked on a large dairy before and after school during high school, not a single illegal working there. You had white kids and Portuguese working. Later I had jobs working in restaurants, no illegals working there either. But how could this be? How was it possible for businesses to exist without hiring illegals?

Well, you had kids in high school who weren't afraid of working, you had Americans who didn't feel certain jobs were beneath them. You had Americans who wanted to provide for their families any way they could. But now we have become a country of sissies inhabited by those who if they can't sit in front of a computer or have to get dirty hands they won't work.

So quit blaming the people who are willing to do the jobs Americans refuse to do.

I don't blame those people, I blame the ones allowing unregulated entry into the US. One of the problems is wages have been stagnant for a very long time because of the illegals taking jobs at low wages. School systems get bogged down, health care. Too big a strain on our system to have an unregulated flow of illegals.

There are 3 reasons:

1) Jobs

2)Jobs

3)Jobs

If Republicans were actually serious about stopping illegal immigration the solution is simple:  make hiring undocumented immigrants a felony. Locking up a slew of bosses would do wonders in that regard. But for some reason they refuse to take that step. Maybe they don't want to anger the farmers and other agricultural interests who provide a solid base of support and who depend on illegal immigrants for labor?

Raids were happening before, with both Trump and Obama.

What's that got to do with making it a felony to hire illegal immigrants? In 2017 the Republicans controlled both branches of Congress and held the Presidency. If illegal immigration was the threat they made it out to be, why not make it a felony?

That is such a tired and racist shibboleth, please stop using it. There are NO jobs that Americans refuse to do. There ARE jobs that Americans refuse to do because the pay is too low, and is driven to low levels by competition from illegal immigrants. That is one of the biggest problems about illegal immigration- it hurts BIPOC Americans and those in the lower economic deciles the most. Without the presence of illegals, the free market could determine the correct wages for all jobs.

I have no problem with that. It would have been a great accompaniment to, I don't know, BUILDING A BORDER WALL perhaps?  Using the National Guard to guard the nation? Step up deportations?

I suggest you take that up with the member I was responding to.

If it were done you wouldn't need to take all those steps. Of course, much of the economy of US would crash, but the dire threat posed by illegal immigration would be definitively ended.
