That was the going rate in Phuket a few years ago if you got caught drinking and driving and wanted to avoid prosecution. Had a good friend who was charged the same and also Goldie the DJ from the UK was nabbed for that amount, my son from the UK was managing one of the larger Beachclubs in Phuket at the time so knew him well, Goldie called him to bring the cash to the station as he had no way to get it.

not a bad result compared to how it would have been if caught in the UK. for example,The system over here has its advantages, despite the almost continuous criticism it receives

In Thailand the penalties for DUI is an imprisonment for a term not exceeding 1 year and/or a fine from 5,000 to 20,000 Baht. Moreover, suspension of driving license for at least 6 months or license revocation.

Although that's so long as you don't injure someone, then its more of course

S.S.Z. 4.0 - is the baby of RTP chief Pol Gen Suwat Changyodsuk and part of a 20 year strategy to address crime and get the public to respect the police again

In a system where you buy your position and keep doing so for higher promotion...

where do you think that money comes from... a meager salary?

"taken to Immigration the next day to have their passports stamped, or they could pay 20,000 baht each and be free to go! "

They must have had "newbie" or "gullible" stamped on their foreheads,    whoever falls for that one almost deserves it, What exactly were they told would be stamped in their passports?    assuming the story is true, which i doubt

That was also the usual treatment for some of those found guilty of DUI.... a police officer saying 'off to immigration' after already paying up in court. The whole process was an exercise in extortion. I believe a Permission can be cancelled at immigration if a person has a criminal record... not sure if a DUI conviction constitutes that! You are not in Kansas any more

You will be able to answer that yourself should you ever get caught.
