Britain’s opposition Labour Party demand energy price cap freeze

LONDON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Britain's main opposition Labour Party called on Monday for the energy price cap to be frozen this autumn to help the public deal with another expected surge in fuel bills during the worst cost-of-living crisis in decades.

 

Labour leader Keir Starmer said his party, if in power, would cap energy costs at the current level of 1,971 pounds ($2,386) per year for six months from October and would pay for it by extending the windfall tax on oil and gas companies in the North Sea.

 

The 29 billion-pound plan is aimed at increasing pressure on foreign minister Liz Truss and former finance minister Rishi Sunak, the two Conservative Party politicians vying to be Britain's next prime minister after Boris Johnson said he would step down.

Nah, should go with Gordon Brown’s nationalisation idea…but kudos to starmer for throwing this into the truss/sunak campaigns.

 

No doubt both will be busy explaining why they don’t think this plan will work.
 

Though in truss’ case we will have to wait until someone on her team “clarifies” what she meant the next day.

No. They should renationalise power and water. Privatisation has been an abject failure and people will die this winter as a result.

Back off his holidays then? Why was there no outcry about him being away at a time of crisis?

 

The real point here is “…if in power…”. He isn’t and never will be, so whatever he says is of no consequence. As he’s labour it will be a pack of lies anyway.

What Starmer and all other of his ilk fail to realize is that by disincentivizing private companies oil and gas exploration in the North Sea they are creating a perfect storm for the future and guaranteeing both supply issues and also an inability to control price spikes as the UK will be forced to scramble to import energy or fire up the old coal power plants to meet energy demands. Cutting fuel taxes would be the sensible route here, and if the budget can't cover this, then start sacking civil servants.

 This hare-brained scheme will come back to haunt the Brits in the not too distant future.

I don't think anyone will take notice of Sir as he isn't in a position to do anything, just expected bluster....

You may note that starmer has not advocated nationalisation.

 

And if you think that what is happening now is working out then you have clearly lost touch with reality.
 

truss’ team are probably already explaining stuff to the confused -that being their candidate…hopefully, for truss, clarification team are on standby for when she demonstrates that the explanation didn’t sink in.

Millions of people up and down the nation are struggling to pay bills, millions are already in debt to energy companies at a time when warm weather might otherwise have given them chance to pay back debt/build credit.

 

And these millions have in mind the certain fact more price hikes are in the pipeline.

 

These millions are also being treated to an incumbent Tory PM refusing point blank to help them, while two more Tories vie for his job, the front runner of which has stated no more handouts.

 

Labour has offered a clear, simple and costed proposal that addresses the concerns of people being driven into poverty by energy bills at a time when oil and gas companies are raking in vast profits.

 

The electorate have time to hear these proposals, measure them against their own needs and ponder this while the Tories continue for weeks more of internal wrangling with nothing but more pain on offer for the millions facing a choice between ‘Heating and Eating’.

Of course, if working people can’t pay their bills they will demand higher pay, perhaps resorting to industrial action (as is their right).

 

Millions of people in a wealthy nation having to choose between ‘Heating and Eating’, millions of others already struggling to afford food.

 

Clearly this is not going to be tolerated for long.

 

Well done Starmer for proposing practical and costed help to millions of people struggling with extortionate energy prices.

It may have been in the past, but as that article mentions, with the removal of Clause 4 in the 90s, the Labour Party no longer stands on a platform of the social ownership of the means of production. It is just another social democratic party supporting capitalism. 

 

And before anyone launches into you're a terrorist-loving, Brit-hating, Putin-loving, etc tirade, I'm not suggesting that socialism is necessarily desirable, merely pointing out that the current Labour Party is not socialist.
