Youth groups, eyeing change, wait with bated breath for ruling on PM

August 24 has portents of becoming judgement day as leaders of many youth movements are planning major protests if Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha holds on to power he seized eight years ago.

 

Speaking at a seminar at Thammasat University’s Pridi Banomyong International College on August 15, the student activists said that many groups are holding their breath to see how the establishment elite would decide Prayut’s political future.

 

The 2017 Constitution says the prime minister shall not hold office for more than eight years, whether as consecutive terms or separately. Legal experts have not been able to reach a consensus on whether his premiership should be counted from August 24, 2014 when he took office for the first time after leading a coup, or from the time the current charter came into force in April 2017.

If he or the person above him want him to stay in power that is what will happen.

 

(Just had a thought.  Maybe he could change his name and start a new 8 year period.)

The 2017 constitution said that ministers appointed under the previous constitution were eligible to remain in place so impossible for anyone to properly argue that Prayut can stay in place after this month when the constitution is obviously retrospective on this score. His 8 years begins 2014 and not 2017.

• Perhaps he could assign the role to his old buddy who did several years jail time in Australia for drugs. I'm sure they can work out some way to make it all sound like it's following the constitution/law.

Prayut decides for himself and I'm sure he won't be stepping down voluntarily.

He took the prime minister rule when he took office in 2014.

Not from when the charter was signed.
