Press honors dozens of Thai cops who "hid their light under a bushel"

Incoming RTP chief Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat presented  awards from the Crime Reporters' Association of Thailand to the unsung heroes of the Thai police. 

 

The ceremony lauded around two dozen policemen and women for their work in the last year.

 

While there were some familiar names, many were just normal cops going the extra mile to help the public.

 

Daily News said these were cops who "pit thong lang phra" - put the gold leaf on the back of the Buddhist image, that means hiding one's light under a bushel.

Among those getting awards at Rajabhat University in Bang Khen, Bangkok, were Pol Col Chakrit of the highways department who gave CPR to an unconscious man in a car.

 

The Border Patrol police for their all round sterling work.

 

Corporal Warawuth of the Bang Bua Thong force in Nonthaburi who took the public's washing in when it was raining.

 

Lance corporals Theeradon and Narakorn in Ang Thong who arrested a fake cop gang.

 

Sen Sgt Maj Phatsakorn of the highway cops who adopted the stance of not issuing tickets but giving warnings instead.

 

Pol Maj Pheerawuth, a traffic cop, who jumped into the Saen Saep canal to save a woman who had jumped off a bridge.

 

Pol Sgt Chomchon who persuaded a potential suicide woman on Rama 8 bridge not to jump.

 

Pol Col Siriwat Deephor, a senior spokesman, for his work in warning the public about the menace of call centers and online crime.

 

Nong Saeng police station in Saraburi for their implementation of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy.

Pol Col Sirikun was rewarded for her work in promoting mental health issues in the "Depress We Care" scheme. 

 

Others were rewarded for their work in helping the public with aspects related to the pandemic. 

 

Damrongsak said it was good to see hard work, diligence and goodness among his men and women pay off with these awards from journalists.

 

Many of the recipients were barely known to commanders, but not now. 

 

The event yesterday was also sponsored by the government lottery office, the research and development of journalists' training center and Central Pattana group.

That is the first time I have ever heard that expression, so I looked it up.  Sure seems like putting your light under a bushel basket is a bad thing, as you are supposed to put it on a stand to let goodnes and light out...

Some of us are quick to knock the BiB. Among these being honoured I'm sure there are some that really did go the extra mile, even by our differing standards.

 

In the face of having to work alongside those that would do otherwise, perhaps their awards are deserved.

While arresting  a fake cop gang would be considered police work, even if it might be just protecting their source of income, everything else is just actions taken to help other citizen. Actions that many non-police individuals do certainly regularly on a daily basis, without being recognized for those actions.

Police here specialize in actions that are non life threatening for themselves, while citizens are dying because of inaction where there might be a danger to them.

So what is it that they are celebrating after all??
