Orange pre-paid SIM is the best deal at the moment if you don't have a proper address validated by being on the voters register (for bargain postpaid GPRS deals).

You can order an Orange SIM for less than a quid on eBay if you have an address where you can pick it up in the UK or go to an Orange shop when you get here (not sure how much it is).

Once you have the SIM in your phone, dial 450 to top up with voucher (bought from newsagent in my case). Then dial again and press key 3 which gets you to the extras sections where you can either buy a day's unlimited GPRS internet for a quid or a weeks for a fiver. Speed is slightly better than AIS in Bangkok.

You will have to reset your phone for Orange settings, already built into mine. The only setting that might be amiss (if you use a datacard) is the APN which should read orangeinternet. BUT if you use all of your top-up to buy the internet access, leaving a balance of zero it throws the system off and the connection keeps dying every few minutes so you must have a quid minimum balance left afterwards. No idea why that it but it goes down with both my datacard and Nokia 9300..

3G is also available in many areas but I have not seen any reasonable prepaid deals on it yet.

Forgot to mention that you have to get Orange's infamous Safeguard turned off - stops you visiting google groups, stickman and porno sites. You have to register on-line and then turn it off in your account but this will probably not work if you are not on the voter's register as they cross-check your name against their own database which I guess is linked to the voter's register. The alternative is to take your passport to the Orange shop and get it turned off there via a phone call to their registration centre - most staff will deny that this is possible but there is usually one person who knows what is what, albeit giving you a disgusted look! Ah yes, the joys of Blair/Brown's socialist state!

T-Mobile has a good deal on 3G connections. maximum £1 a day on PAYG, great to hook up to your notebook and use as a modem, pretty fast too.
