BANGKOK, Oct 7 (TNA) – The national police chief said he will discuss with the Interior Ministry control on police’s firearms after the massacre by a former policeman and the police would work out its own measures related to the weapons of present and former police.

 

Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapas, commissioner of the Royal Thai Police Office, said the office planned to discuss such measures with the Interior Ministry and organizations responsible for the permission of police’s firearm possession.

 

There would have to be urgent measures to prevent the abuse of their weapons, the national police chief said.

But to enter a nursery and savagely kill young children with a machete, it's beyond belief.

As for this report it is BS, once again they will do nothing. As for the people who want more guns on the street this is ludicrous it will increase deaths.

 

Until the Thais replace the RTP with a real police force and not a TOY TOWN POLICE FORCE nothing will change. It will need an honest Government in Thailand first. I can't see that happening in a hurry!

is it going to be as effective as enforcing traffic laws, as effective as enforcing helmet wearing, stopping at pedestrian crossings....

Ban guns... Ban policemen from taking their guns home. 

Ban the army from taking their guns out of barracks. 

Jail time for those breaking the laws 

 

Its difficult because pandoras box is already open... but Australia managed it. 

 

That said - given the amount of guns in Thailand gun crime is not as prolific as it is in the states which by far exceeds countries such as Thailand on gun-death per capita basis. 

 

Something needs to be done of course - the knee jerk ‘controls to be tightened’ is just media lip-service, we know nothing will change because change takes effort. 

 

Nothing like advertising your next move, he may have well said, hide your guns, 

Typical knee jerk reaction to a problem that has been plaguing Thailand for decades!

How about tighten up who you hire to be police officers.

Not your imagination....this is the RTP usual stance....never anything to do with them!

Somyot gave out 150,000 new handguns ....and let the minders of the old weapons keep them!

Hang on, the incident is being reported as a privately owned weapon. Why a sudden call for a crackdown on police weapons ?????

Would be much more peaceful and far less crime if they banned the RTP as well ????

I don't know that a manchette has been mentioned in any official news reports, only mention of a knife.

To put things in context, a gun was the enabler of the incident. He shot the 5 adults, who may have otherwise been able to stop, defend or lessen the impact of the knife attack. 

Its possible that carrying guns emboldened the attacker, armed with just a knife, things may have turned out very different.

One of the surviving children had 2 bullets removed from his head.

How about police firearms are held in a safe storage area within the station.. to be checked in and out at each shift?

Some of the " Controls " that could be implemented could be actioned within a matter of Hours with little on no discussion.

The Head Honcho just has to issue an order that all Police Officers have to hand in ALL their Weapons with immediate effect.

There is certainly no need at all for an Officer to carry Arms whilst not on Duty, and also there is absolutely no requirement for an Officer to own " Private " Weapons, which seems to be the case in so many incidents involving Police Officers in Thailand.

The argument used that the Weapons are for self protection really does not carry any weight, when there is obviously so little control or management over these so called Officers
