Bangkok imposes fines against canal littering

BANGKOK (NNT) - Bangkok city hall is now imposing a fine of up to 10,000 baht against canal littering, as the city steps up its effort to improve the efficiency of water drainage amidst the rainy season.

 

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has revealed its plan to stringently enforce the law against littering which could result in a fine of as much as 10,000 baht. This push for cleanliness from the city hall is a part of the effort to improve the city’s water drainage capacity.

 

Governor of Bangkok Chadchart Sittipunt said around 9,000 tons of garbage are being collected each day, while some of the discarded items end up in canals and clog drainage pipes.

 

The governor asked local communities to manage waste and keep their canals clean. The city hall will be running more boats to collect garbage from waterside households, in an effort to reduce the amount of waste ending up in the water.

 

The city hall will be proactively encouraging its residents to dispose of bulky items at designated sites. The city offers pick-up services on weekends free of charge.

 

Littering in public is considered a violation of the Act on the Maintenance of the Cleanliness and Orderliness of the Country.

 

Violators could face a 2,000-baht fine for littering on land, and up to 10,000 baht for polluting the water. Those reporting violations are entitled to a part of this fine as a reward.

cheaper to dump along the roads then, lot of it where we are. Sometimes they stick up the 2k fine warning, nobody has ever been caught. Once saw truck unloading rubbish onto roadside, cop car drove straight by

With some ~10 million (6m officially) people living in BKK....trash collection has never been able to keep up.

There are mountains of garbage stacked up each day...most only removed once a week....that is after the dogs have made their mess!

9000 tonnes daily is unmanageable....as it shows. 

Thais deal with millions of plastic bags each day....all markets and general stores just keep the flow going.....Bangkok and the rest of the country will never get on top of this issue....fines to Thais are meaningless...no-one pays!

The new governor seems to be trying his best. More education is needed. 

In Kenya there is a US$ 40,000 (yes, you read that right) fine for having a plastic bag. However, while they successfully ended plastic bags being used, they are now cutting down more trees to make the paper bags that shops use. It shows that fines don't solve the problem without a lot of thought about the repercussions.

The country's capital is a disgrace! It's worse than Vientiane, definitely worse than Singapore can't fairly comment on other SEAsian capitals.

 

I lived 2 soi's away from the Kings Palace in Hua Hin you would think that would be kept clean? Need I go on!
