Pattaya Mayor Poramase Ngampiches said he is planning to change the traffic plan on Sukhumvit Road in Naklua to facilitate a drainage system construction project.

The mayor had discussed with Banglamung police and decided to close three intersections, including Sawangfa, Chiayapornwithi, and Sian Sue Chinese Shrine, to facilitate a drainage system construction project that has just entered its first phase. To alleviate traffic, two U-turns have been set at the Esso gas station and Naklua Park at Maryvit School.

However, there are still many complaints about this plan, and Poramase stated that he is doing his best to find the right solution. One of the ideas is to reopen the intersections on weekdays, according to him, but this still requires advice from Banglamung traffic police and opinions from motorists.

Yikes what a mess good luck.

Isn't it just.....

Part of the problem is indeed them shopping and changing the configuration...... one day a set of lights are on, one day they are off, and there was once a through lane that worked well, which later got changed. They have made a right pig's ear of the alternative, The Railway Line Bypass, which has been renamed 'tour of scruffy backroads'.... which has been a suspension destroyer for over a year now. I have paid 10 baht and wasted fuel to use Hwy 36 and Hwy 7 quite a number of times, but beware weekend Bangkok traffic.

Kind of late, already a mess!

Already broken and you want to ask them for advice you ran for mayor touting something different but seems you from the swamp to?

Asking for advice from them their solution is to block off roads. Put more cones then take off when all hell's breaks back to playing with their phones.

Rather a shame the man at the top cannot install a few roundabouts

Thais would get dizzy & fall asleep on these.  The National Motto of Thailand is ME FIRST so giving way to traffic coming from the right would be anathema to the general public.

The local roundabout in my neck of the woods is a nightmare, people on the roundabout actually stop to give-way to incoming traffic?

Defeats the usual arrangement.

Darn it all.  I thought they might have been building an overpass for thru traffic to avoid some of the intersections, like they have done in Si Racha.

I think an overpass for say North Rd is problematic as the flyover onto the motorway is in the way.....they built an underpass (often called tunnel) that does half the job by avoiding Klang for through traffic.

There were (are?) actually plans for 3 underpasses; my partner and I saw a table layout at City Hall some years ago that showed the 3 underpasses.  One underpass was to go under North Pattaya Road and a longer one was to go under Pattaya Tai and Thepprasit.  Unfortunately, only one has been built so far, the Klang one you mentioned.  If I am remembering correctly, these underpass projects were under the purview of one of the highway departments, rather than Pattaya City, although City Hall would likely be quite involved.

Pity they didn't seize the day and work on them during the quieter covid years.  The North Pattaya/Sukumvit intersection is going to be an even bigger problem once tourism really gets going again.  Things seem fairly busy now with probably around 8 million visitors to Thailand this year.  What's it going to be like with 5 times that amount if we get back to 40 million in a few years?
