CNN  — UK former Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pulled out of the contest to become the next Conservative Party leader and therefore the next prime minister.

Johnson claimed to have garnered the support of 100 MPs – the minimum number required to clear the threshold to appear on the ballot for the Conservative Party membership – but declined to run, saying “this would simply not be the right thing to do” as “you can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in Parliament,” according to the PA Media news agency.

His announcement comes after Britain’s former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak officially entered the race to lead the Conservative Party, his second attempt at the position this year.

Perhaps Boris decided that the agro he'd get just wasn't worth it, or perhaps he didn't want the third candidate having a chance. Without Boris running it's highly likely that Sunak will be next PM.

Yeah, right…sure you did.

“As he dropped out of the race, Johnson claimed to have won the support of 102 colleagues – two clear of the threshold needed – but only about 60 had publicly stated their support for him.“

If the below is true, it shows how delusional johnson really is

“The Times carries a similar headline: “Sunak set for No 10 as Johnson quits race”. The papers writes that the “Ex-PM blames lack of unity among candidates” for his exit from the race.

It reports that Johnson accused Sunak and Mordaunt of “failing to come together in the national interest after they rebuffed his attempts to strike a deal.” It was reported that Johnson met with Sunak and Mordaunt over the weekend, urging them to pull out.”

johnson supporters threatening to continue disruption if/when sunak becomes party leader.

This from Christopher Chope

“We have got a parliamentary party which is completely riven, and it’s ungovernable,” Chope told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. “In a sense, that is the reason why Boris has pulled out, because obviously Rishi Sunak wasn’t prepared to guarantee him his support in the event that he was elected as leader by the party and the country.

“Unless we can have somebody as our leader in parliament who commands the support and respect of the parliamentary party, we are in effect actually ungovernable.”

It's a bit rich for Chope to complain about chaos in government given his record in parliament

Both the UK public  and the financial markets won't forgive the Tories if chaos persists, and rightly so. The idiots caused enough trouble with Brexit, condemning the UK to third country status, a loss of 4% of GDP and a collapse in investment.

Not much talk about sovereignty these days, gone with the wind like Liz Truss

I lived in the UK from 2000 to 2009, and it seemed pretty third world back then. The NHS hospitals I worked in certainly seemed to be from 19th century ( actually some really were ).

Perhaps that was one reason I liked Thailand more than UK- more modern.

Agreed, Mr Conservative. Will you please propose a general election, then?

Thought not...

Okay I need to be fair to Chope. He did call for a general election.

Credit where credit's due, although his motives for doing so are somewhat questionable.
