i have. many times. its just they dont take any interets in us unless we are paying.

Dont pay walk away. In NK this guy had no interest in free beers, works in Laos, spoke good English. Was keen to make new friends.

After 10 minutes you can tell if someone is worth befriending.

  • Our mothers don't put us on a pedistal and tell us how great we are from birth and we are not brought up being told that we were never colonised and we don't need foreigners!

  • Speak Thai. Join a club—running, cycling etc. Highly touristic areas not the best.

  • hmm, maybe. but if others have the same experience, some who have been here 30 years, maybe it isnt just me eh?

Did I misinterpret the tone here?

Wide berth.

What tone do you detect?  Do you actually know what bitterness is?

The tone is obvious. Learn English if you don't understand.

Sparky is still feeling his way! Don't be too harsh on him!

Lived for a year in Malaysia...similar story but at least there's more interaction there due to a common lingo. (English)

Lived in Indo too but I never tried it..too busy with the wimmenz ????

Just effort. Take an interest in people.

It sounds like Bob is doing that.  Do you not acknowledge that anyone could have an experience different to that of your perception of your own?

Remember, ladyBOYS are men.   OK, joking but not really joking.... lol

exercise, met many, all fine.   workplaces, teachers, etc.... all fine.

The PROBLEM I have is if these Thai guys drink......maybe after exercise they start drinking and I stick around..........90% of the time I leave early because things get weird.  aggressive, strange, whatever.....i've seen it happen enough times.

advice:  not involving alcohol.

Lots of Thai men friends, lately most have been made through jogging and exercise. But for you be careful remember your adventure with a woman you "met" drinking. Got to Koh Chang and she wanted money. That was fun, and I wish you better luck.

I am getting that picture of why Thais don't want to hang out with some of you lot haha

What a bunch of self-righteous windbags.

Perhaps you are not capable of perceiving the supreme irony of your last sentence.

It isn't a bitter tone.

Someone who is bitter is angry and unhappy because they cannot forget bad things that happened in the past:

I don't see any of the above in the comment of the user you quoted.

"I haven't made friends here in 30 years", "I tend to give Thai men a wide birth".  Neither of these sentences have a sense of angriness or unhappiness.  They don't actually show much emotion at all.  And my English is very good.  (I know I didn't use the exact quote, but I'm going from what you wrote above.)

I will go out on a limb here..

Maybe there's no concept of friendship here..at least as we understand it.

There's family and there's acquaintances and that's about it

Making adult friends can be tricky. People busy with work or family or just tired. I agree with that. Culture adds to it. Making friends with French guys? I did that, got a free meal. Was ordinary. They mostly hang with other French.

Id rather hang with a hot woman tbh.

If you want a Thai male friend you need a common hobby. I dont think guys just want to talk like women.

Women are up for it anywhere, it's a question of reading the price tag.

There you go. Common hobby.

More hobbies you have = more friends.

There you go. Send 50,000 baht. We can do a fire walk later.

Were, back in the day.

More than  (normal) Thais

..but that's for a different thread ????

Not everyone is an extrovert.

i'd still like to give it a shot yeh. frutiless as it may be, there must be at least one thai man in thailand that i can get along with on a deeper level than 'hello, how are you?' 'you eat today yet?' ????

So what would you like to talk about with them or what activities are on your mind?

I.e. I play pool with all kinds of nationalities including Thai. But after that we go different ways and likely meet again on a future day to play pool.

We like to play pool, that's the connection. And it seems most of us are just interested in the game and not the family or job of the other guys.

True. Lots are quiet. U dont need many friends though. A few is enough.

I dont want many. Too annoying.

you think this could be an underlying issue? do they think that they are too good for us? or maybe they are scared that their ego will take a bruising when next to a foriegner? i know thai men have big egos but surely not that big that they cant have a foreigner as a friend?

Is it only Thai men?

Do you have any friends i.e. from Japan, China, Korea, etc.? There are lots of guys with these nationalities in Thailand.

And it seems they all have their own culture. This is why there are areas full of Koreans and Korean shops. And i.e. lots of (Thai run) bars which are only specialized on Japanese customers.

On Wednesday nights I go to running club and have few beers after and on Saturday mornings a loose crew of between 2-8 catch up for a lazy swim and a run then off to a cafe for breakfast.

Some women call our Saturday group the “Mens shed” ???? it’s not men only, women are welcome ????

My wife is mortified that we can hang out for 4 hours, just can’t understand it !

Try making friends with the security guards at your condo. Start local in your building.
