Rio de Janeiro — Truckers and other protesters on Tuesday blocked highways for a second day in support of President Jair Bolsonaro, who has yet to accept his election loss to leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The country's Federal Highway Police (PRF) reported more than 250 total or partial blockages in at least 23 of Brazil's 27 states.

 

On Monday night, protests blocked roads outside Sao Paulo's Guarulhos airport, the country's main international hub, and several flights were cancelled, local media reported. These protests have since been dispersed.

They aren't the only two but Brazil is an important country. Trump endorsed Bolsonaro BTW, which was no surprise.

 

Bolsonaro doesn’t concede loss to Lula but allows transition to begin

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday broke two days of silence after his election loss to former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva with an ambiguous pledge to follow the constitution without acknowledging the victor or conceding defeat as his supporters staged protests across the country aimed at bringing Latin America’s largest nation to a halt.

 

The right-wing incumbent, who had remained out of view for 45 hours after the race was called Sunday night for Lula, spoke for less than two minutes Tuesday afternoon at the Alvorada Palace in Brasilia, thanking his voters and describing the blockading of highways throughout Brazil as rightful expression of “indignation and a sense of injustice.”

If you believe for one minute that the blockade is a grass roots action . . .

20 years ago Lula emerged as Brazil's Mandela, so to speak: he was the first president to come out of the working class.  The locals were impressed that at his inaugural celebration the food was "down home" dishes, as opposed to imported fancy foods.

And as in S. Africa, his successor was unimpressive (IMO).  I don't feel good about the future of that country.
