A Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra collided and crashed at the Wings Over Dallas airshow around 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Authorities responded to the incident at Dallas Executive Airport, Jason Evans with Dallas Fire-Rescue told CNN on Saturday.

The number of casualties in the crash was still not confirmed later on Saturday afternoon, according to Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson.

Multiple videos on Twitter.

Big fireball and dark clouds of smoke.

That went terribly wrong.

Pilot of small plane seemed to have no clue what was happening below his plane.

Hit like a kamikaze.

IMHO it was pilot error by the KingCobra pilot. The video the BBC aired showed the P63 approaching the B17 from the port rear quarter and too fast. There should have been at least 500 metres of airspace at least all around the B17.

There is NO excuse for a midair collision with the clear visibility conditions at the time.

A sad and  tragic waste of life, when more flight planning and less gung ho would have paid off.

It seems like there was no effective air traffic control. Still, VFR rules should have been enough as you say.
