The Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports is struggling to scramble for the remaining one billion baht to purchase the broadcasting rights for the Fifa World Cup that will kick off in Qatar from November 20th to December 18th, or less than a week from today (November 14th).

 

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) approved only 600 million baht for the ministry to finance the purchase of airing rights for the World Cup matches, while Fifa has set the price at 1.6 billion baht.

 

Subsequently, this left the ministry chaired by Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn with few options, and according to recent reports, the Authority of Tourism and Sports of Thailand (SAT) is negotiating with Fifa to drop the price tag on its broadcasting rights for the 2022 World Cup matches.

I thought they can charm the world with their magical soft power.

FIFA cannot lower the prices as at the next World cup , Thailand will be back

again cap in hand wanting a big discount , once again Thailand has left it to

the last minute , if they don't manage to do a deal Thai people are not going

to be happy.

They have had 4 years to plan for this...so they think "ahhhh let's wait until 4 days before" would the tv channels even have time to rig it all up in time now?

There’s nothing to ‘rig up’... its simply receiving a signal from the cameras already there...

The only thing Thailand would need to do is get the right to ‘re-broadcast’ with their own commentary... of ‘or hooooor’.... ‘geng maaak’... ‘ai-yaaaaa’...

Yes, a 12 year old can find a live stream online.

It wont be the end of the world as anyone with internet these these can live stream the games for free.

I could think of many, much better things Thailand could have done with a billion baht to better the lives of it's people, but this is soccer, and for some people soccer is more important than life...

Why does this news not surprise me…Thailand as always leaving it to the last minute thinking they will get a discount, you couldn’t make it up bunch of ass hats in charge.

if they don’t succeed in getting the football then some of the money raised would be better spent on helping the poor of the country, maybe even clean out the drainage pipes so the cities and towns don’t flood

Can’t the owners of the monopolies or duopolies pay for it ?

Déjà vu. This is almost an identical headline to four years ago. The world's 14 largest economy goes begging to FiFa. Like 4 years ago it was announced at the last minute that it would indeed be shown for free to air as it benefits the economy. My crystal ball says watch this space.

'Some people' is an expected 5 billion viewers - although probably none in Thailand. But they can't spend a billion Baht anyway, so it isn't wasted on people who need to get a life.

The proceeds on gambling alone should cover the costs!

As usual, Thailand thinks it's special and doesn't have to play by the rules - same as the people who break laws every day. It's deeply ingrained into the culture. And you can be absolutely sure that no-one asking for the discount has considered the uproar if one country, a south-east backwater, received a discount and no-one else did - because those countries have had four years to plan. For Thailand, the World Cup appears to have come as a complete surprise.

Just let it go. Not all Thais are interested in football. So using taxpayers money for this is not justified. The World Cup damages productivity as people stay up late to watch it and billions are wasted in illegal betting. The whole thing is a big yawn.

just pass the hat around to the boss at every cop shop in Thailand with the message ' pay up or else '  

and I'm sure you'll have your billion baht in no time at all.

The TAT just asked for an extra Thb8 billion for more vaccinations.....they could buy these viewing rights easily.....but of course, that would mean less 1st class travel for their  important managers most likely

 Now who are the cheap Charles, just pay the price asked.  I will watch the matches using my VPN and streamed to the 70" big screen.

So Thailand want FIFA ( Foreigners) to slash the cost of the world cup while at the same time insisting foreigners pay double for hotel rooms, healthcare and ban them from using pay-pal. Charge Them DOUBLE FIFA!

I'm 95% confident that a deal will be struck. It sounds like it might land between 1.1B and 1.5B baht. The loss of face would be epic were this deal not to get done.

 

The problem with letting this go late, in 2018 they had a deal 2 ~ 3 months before the first match - is that sponsors will get a lot less bang for their buck. They could have been tieing in marketing efforts, launching new products, building brand awareness for months leading up to the event. Now? No one will pay much attention to those companies which might end up throwing a few hundred mil into the beggars cup.

 

I think the regime has just grown even more fat and lazy - the Thai-way, and there was no senior level champion.
