"We don't do that sort of thing".

Has he ever been in an Immigration Office?  One acquaintance pays a senior official a retainer handed over in his private office for services rendered/services yet to come.

Seems Chuwit hasn't yet specifically brought up the 800K/400K requirement issue; it will be interesting if he does. I assume Prayuth has always known about it. I prefer adherence to a rule of law in most situations, but half my friends might have to find a different country if that became an issue.

Not your problem. If they can't abide by the rules, of which I do, then it's bye bye.

I'm the father of 3 teenage children and I'm not going to jeopardize my position in living here. If others do then fair play to them. I have no sympathy if they get caught.

Fair answer. Well said.

If you can't meet the criteria then dont blame the system.

Too many foreigners think they have a right to reside here by bending the rules.

Nope definitely reading. No Internet in 1966, and the best porn remains the well written one. Today's animated one is just gross and repetitive. Nothing beats a strong mental picture.

Guess that the guy's selling screen cleaning stuff won't agree.

If abiding by the rules becomes required large numbers of the administration will also be saying bye bye.

Bent is an outrageous slur infinitely flexible in the trouser pocket area is more fitting????

This is small change for the immigration police.

The bulk of their dirty money comes from pensioners who don't meet requirements to live here and pay agents 15-20k, of which the bent officer gets 10k for stamping the visa extension with one eye closed.

This practice is being reported more and more, so if you are an illegal immigrant, beware, you might get kicked out the country sooner than you realize.

There's even a couple of banks in Pattaya with immigration police falsifying the illegals bank books!

But a lot of those that pay an agent 15-20k do not seem to see it as a bribe and therefore not a crime.

It is a facilitation! They see it as another's crime not theirs..... they are paying an agent and have no direct contact.

The corrupt RTP/Immigration will never change in a country that sits in the lower half of the world corruption list.

Agents will be around long after you and the rest of the posters on AN have long gone

A lot of things aren't RIGHT in Thailand. Corruption will continue, it's a way of life here

But as per 'Big Jokes' seems to see it. You gotta start somewhere. It's a way of life in many country's but it's still illegal where ever you may be in the world.

I do not agree, if that happened, well just think about it. Imagine IO's having the freedom just to charge what they like for all the different services, visa's, 90 day reporting etc. Any agent I have used has always been honest and fair except one.

Out of interest, what country are you from?

Do you think illegal immigrants there are OK?

99% of agents are dishonest as the bribe immigration police.

Immigration will one day be cleaned out and the illegals will be deported, mark my words.

I come from Scotland same as you, But my views on this are well known, I do respect you as a poster, but disagree with you on so many things. let's just say I have a very strong hatred of the illegal Thailand soldiers government, despite that, Thailand is still much better to live in than anywhere in the UK.

If you read the UK newspapers, I think you will find that Thailand, with a similar population is much worse with crime than Thailand. I can walk the streets of Bangkok and Pattaya in safety even after dark. Try that in any major UK city.

Fair enough, my views have changed over the years. I broke the law in Scotland for not paying the Poll Tax as I hate the Thatcher government. Is this a valid excuse for not doing something I don't want to do?

I do see the point of people saying 'well Thailand is corrupt, so I will be corrupt too'.

However, I think it is hypocritical when people use visa agents then complain about the corruption in Thailand, as they are contributing to it.

I also understand that some newbies here feel intimidated by the immigration police and use agents to secure their stay.

One of my good friends who is totally against corruption of any kind told me that he didn't have to travel to Bangkok anymore for his letter from the embassy as the IO asked him how much it would cost and suggested he pay 5000 baht to her and she could fix it. He would never even pay a traffic bribe but when it comes to something that helps him a lot, as he's old, he succumbed and what upsets me more is that he denies that he is taking part in corruption.

I hate immigration and have had run ins with them. I even contacted a former Minister of Finance to send a team to my local immigration to sort something out.

This guy is very concerned about corruption in immigration and his team are talking about what to do with the large-scale use of visa agents and how they are protected by senior police. This could all come crashing down at any moment, and I think it is responsible to warn all expats who live here with families. Do things by the book!

Very interesting answers here. I will send you a PM later today. I will do things by the book, but up to a point, just because something is law does not always make it right.

Last trip back I stayed at the IBIS Whitechapel and didn't feel same walking around there at 7 pm. Bring back the Krays ????

Stayed at the bottom of Leith Walk in Edinburgh, same there, actually felt threatened at 3 pm one day!

Walking down Union Street in Aberdeen on a night out was shocked at how aggressive some of the young guys were, bumping into me, etc.

I have walked the streets of Bangkok, even in the worst areas like Khlong Toey and never once felt threatened.

Violence against foreigners and violence by and against locals/other asians are very different. I'd walk the streets of Thailand day or night without worry, not so the UK, especially London.
