madmitch Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 First of all. armed robbery should never be condoned so those of you who have wished good luck to the robber should think before you post such remarks. Secondly I know K. Therdsak who is the best bank manager I have ever dealt with in Thailand, always helpful to farangs. I hope that he has no lasting mental problems as the trauma from an incident like this often manifests itself at a later date. There is some misleading reporting there. I own two guesthouses including the one closest to the bank in question. We were not searched. I know one individual who was suspected due to his size and build and his mother's home was raided by the police and searched. the man was also searched quite thoroughly! He was a bit shaken when I saw him later that day. There were a number of police around after this incident but they seemed to focus more on talking to the local Thai mafia man to see if he had supplied any guns to farangs. The bank's security is certainly not good but if anyone has watched Crimewatch or similar programmes in the UK, you'll see images on there that are just as poor as the ones on the bank's cameras so it's not just Thailand that is low-tech. Someonse also mentioned that banks are insured. True, but this amount would probably be within the self-insured retention (excess/deductible) for a bank the size of SCB. I have been a customer at that bank for some time, in fact I deposited some cash a couple of hours before the incident, and send my best wishes to all the staff.
deminister Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 What do we have great investigators in Thailand. I am not surprised when half the prison population is innocent. How convenient to refer to the shop robbery of the Dutchman. Although he wore a mask and long sleeves so they could not see his color,it was a farang. Maybe, but a very short one would be spotted almost anywhere, just like avery tall Thai. Do not be surprised when they find a 1.40 tall meter Chinese tomorrow who speaks some Thai ans some English, after all the crime has to be solved or will be called solved no matter who will be framed.
desmond Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 I think he needs the 400k to apply for the yearly visa extension
BigSnake Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Could have been a Thai, talking like a Farang to mislead the cops.
bernie66 Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 what a classic tale.... "farang robs thai bank" has such a nice ring to it too ! Only 420,000 baht. The guy had his day and maybe the cops won't be able to catch him who knows. Not saying this guy did anything brave or cool, but the banks rob us all blind on a daily basis. Thai banks more so with some truly queer rules regarding opening accounts, limitations on money transfers, non existent interest rate, etc. As if this bank's going to miss the 420,000 baht. Let's see if and when this guy gets caught and if he's really 'farang'. Can't wait to find out ! I dont want to go off subject but I have yet to decide how what percent of my money to put into a thai bank. I think your comments would make an excellent thread. Please give it a good bit of the old in out, in out when i post it.
jtp Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Well, idiots like that certainly doesn't do our reputation here any favors.BTW, the bank guy Thurdsak--one of my favorite Thai names! Thats not REALLY his name,is it?

jtp Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Must have been a Farang...........................A Thai would have shot the manager dead first, and asked him to unlock the safe after. Yes,if they apply the same logic as in there driving...."Oh,look a red light, lets speed through it on our bike....."
shoewah Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Does anyone else find that heading offensive? Nope, I've never been offended by the term farang. I find it amusing.
larvidchr Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 I have a good guess as to who he is, and I think this is only the first in a long string. Who has just lost a lot of money in Thai banks? Who speaks bad Thai and English? Who is often seen in white shirts and black trousers? Who is only 165cm tall when probbed up by two bodyguards? Who has a popular sport as a very expensive hobby? I am sure other TV members can add more clues about this person

You should be smart enough to know that if someone steals a loaf of bread from Top's Supermarket or robs a bank, those companies will only raise prices or charge higher fees to offset any losses they incur.
Baan Kiki Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Do you think he did a bank job because all the police are guarding the gold shops ? NO ! Because it was quicker than doing a "normal" transaction.

Robbie Dye Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Does anyone else find that heading offensive? He may have been a Thai citizen, albeit a farang. Idiots - he's hardly going to be in a guest house if he is 420,000 richer. I remember when the UK queen was here - the police were searching the KSR guest houses looking for IRA - idiots. Yeah, you must be right - bank robbers and IRA terrorists always stay at the Marriot Maybe he just wanted it to have 400,000 in the bank for his visa application, so went and paid it in to another SCB Branch the next day, with 20k for his trouble?
IAMSOBAD Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 This has 'INSIDE JOB" written all over it. The bank manager says a man ran in and made off with 420,000 in cash. However, he spotted the masked man sitting on a motorbike for 30 minutes just outside and thought nothing of it in the heat of Thailand. Then he immediately blames a WHITE person as the suspect. Iknow if a person has a gun on me I know if he is black...white...asian...whatever. Remember when Jonny Cochran in the O.J. trial said you couldnt tell a black voice from a white voice on a telephone? THATS BULL! Ever call a CALL CENTER...can you tell the INDIAN voice? This was a THAI friend of the MANAGER!!! Proof is the type of clothing. Who wears black pants and a long sleeve white shirt? NOT TOURISTS..workers do! I would bet my entire bank account on it. They sat around and planned it over some beers and pulled it off like clockwork. The reason they did it at closing time is for less people to fool. Follow the manager...follow the money. Do they have dye-packs? What did the other tellers see and hear? The reporting of this story is so poor and lacks so much evidence. I think I will rob a bank in Bangkok ...scream" hot and sour" and drop some white rice and chopsticks and a packet of hot mustard...THEY will look for a Chinaman for sure. BEST OF LUCK TO ALL FELLOW FARANGS.
mellow1 Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 I never see farangs wearing masks, but I see a lot of Thais wearing them everyday.
qualtrough Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Well, idiots like that certainly doesn't do our reputation here any favors.BTW, the bank guy Thurdsak--one of my favorite Thai names! Thats not REALLY his name,is it? Yes, a quite common name. Some of my other favorites are female names Tittiporn and Sukanya, but I digress.
soundman Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 I'm surprised he only made off with 420,000B. Most tellers at major banks have this amount or more in every single till. The door to the safe is usually wide open. I have never seen pop-up security grills. Where was the bank's security person. All major banks, that I have seen, have at least one security officer hovering near the door. This reaks of a bungled inside job. Soundman.
pumpuiman Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 I think it's that guy with the beached sailboat......he'd be desperate enough by now.
bekkie Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 maybe his thai girlie needs a pick-up truck or a nose job at Yanhee hospital. or for a shopping spree at Emporium.
thomo Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Hey, better than going teaching. Moral of the story: When your moneys all gone, forget that lousy TEFL - become mates with a bank manager. Good on him.
Neeranam Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Hey, better than going teaching.Moral of the story: When your moneys all gone, forget that lousy TEFL - become mates with a bank manager. Good on him. What's wrong with teaching? Teaching in Thailand is easy money! What exactly do you do?
taxin Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 I find it quite interesting to see all the jokes being cracked on here. No doubt the same people will be on the forum complaining about the tight visa regulations that will imminently follow ! The immigration department are rubbing there hands right now as we speak ! Wont take them long to recoup the 420,000 baht ! Get those visa applications in now while you still can !!
meemiathai Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Not sure if I am surprised by the large amount of stupidity in this thread.
chinthee Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Farangs in trouble in Phuket have been quite high profile lately. Wonder if this is just low season blues or are we going to start looking upward to the balconies of the condotels in Patong for jumpers?
distortedlink Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Could have been Japanese, Burmese, Indian or was it Harry Bellefonte: ray-o ray-o!' Abolish the visa runs. Tourist visas allow no more than 3 months in any one year. Non immigrant visa applicants raise stake to 2/3 million baht, make them provide police letters from their home countries confirming there is nothing on police records about them and to show proof that they have legitimate means to be able to support themselves and families in Thailand if they intend to stay for the long term future - pension, earnings from business. The one year non immigrant visa should be imposed even on those coming to Thailand who intend to legally work here for less than one year. They can leave the kingdom anytime within one year. Sooner or not so later these visa run dregs that can dodge in & out of Thailand without much effort, will mess things up for all long term residents.
guava Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 At least no shoot out and wounded or dead victims. I work with CCTVs fitted on aircraft and the quality is perfect. I can spot car tags at 20km easy fitted on fixed or rotor craft. These are low quality CCTV images indicating low tech. Probably baht 300 special. The images can be enhanced very easily and more evidence can be collected. Ah yes - image enhancement..... Dammit Chloe, I need this image cleared up now! It's our only chance to stop the bomb! * mutters something about silk purses, sows ears, reality, etc *
Ned Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Farang Out! Farang ork pai! Farang out! Too many already. It's gonna happen folks.
Ned Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 "Manhunt of for French Gunman"......Italian involved. .....in News Clippings in case you haven't seen it. We clean farang are getting a worse name by the day. They'll be coming to our doors with flaming torches in no time to drive out those farang who still haven't left because of the scrapping of espnstar sports.
