Thai court revokes bail for two monarchy reform activists

The Criminal Court revoked the bail for two monarchy reform activists today (Monday), after they had breached their bail conditions by getting involved in public protests.

 

The court also issued warrants for the detention of the two activists, Nutthanit Duangmusit, aka “Bai Por”, and Sopon Surariddhidhamrong, aka “Get”.

 

Nutthanit, of the Thalu Wang monarchy reform activist group,had been indicted with a fellow member, Netiporn Sanesangkhom, on lèse majesté charges. They were held on remand at the Central Women’s Correctional Institute, but went on hunger strike for 64 days in June last year, to protest against their pre-trial detention. Both Netiporn and Nutthanit were granted conditional release in August.

What is interesting for me, residing across the border in a neighboring country, is that I can read and watch international news and videos, uncensored and not subject to lese-majeste restrictions, revelations about the Thai Monarchy similar to those current revelations from Prince Harry about the UK Monarchy.

The truer shame is that the majority of the society won't/can't take a principled stand regarding these long standing and antiquated issues.

Those convicted in Wednesday’s verdict include three former Cabinet members who now lost their post: Digital Economy Minister Buddhipongse Punnakanta, Education Minister Nataphol Teepsuwan, Deputy Transport Minister Thaworn Senneam. They also include politicos Issara Somchai, Chumpol Julsai, Samdin Lertbut, and former monk activist Buddha Issara, who is now known by his secular name Suwit Thongprasert.
