A Thai grandfather aged 81 who was on his way home from a garage after putting his Peugeot in for electrical repairs had a narrow escape when the vehicle burst into flames.

It happened in Suphanburi, central Thailand, on the Malaimaen Road opposite Wat Pa Lae Lai.

Sorayuth said he heard an explosion from the engine compartment and then saw black smoke. He stopped by the side of the road and got out in time.

Locals tried to extinguish the fire with water and hand-held extinguishers to no avail.

But the fire department managed to put out the blaze in ten minutes before it reached the passenger compartment, reported Siam Rath

Sorayuth said there had been a problem with a short circuiting battery and he had taken the car to a garage for repair.

He said he called the garage and the owner accepted full responsibility.

Regarding his close shave with death he said: "It was a minor thing".
