webfact Posted February 11, 2023 Share Posted February 11, 2023 Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported on a tragedy at a funeral being held for an old man when an undertaker was crushed by falling masonry from the chimney of a temple crematorium. It was caused by a gas leak that exploded when the undertaker started to light the fire. Thoeng police in Thoeng district of Chiang Rai and rescue services were called to the temple of Wat Bun Nak in Ban Bun Nak Pattana yesterday at 3pm. They found piles of masonry from a collapsed chimney that had fallen on undertaker Somkhit Kaewnuan, 54, a man from Ngao sub-district. Picture: Thai Rath He had head, arm and leg injuries and was taken to Thoeng Hospital then Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital where he died. Five 48 kilogram gas canisters were isolated from the crematorium. Picture: Thai Rath Several hundred mourners were at the funeral of Kaew, 83, who had died of old age. Most were well away from the crematorium when it exploded. Six close relatives of the deceased were slightly hurt in the blast caused by a gas leak. They had been standing close to the crematorium. Picture: Thai Rath A local phu yai ban told the media that the crematorium was built in 2005/6 and up until a couple of years ago they used kindling and charcoal as fuel.
