BillStrangeOgre
Hi, i'm on prescription blood pressure medication, prescribed by my doctor in the UK. I've run out and need some more. I don't want to pay for a consultation with a doctor to get another prescription, i know what i need. Is there somewhere i can buy it over the counter without a prescription here in Bangkok? Thanks

Popular Post barryw52
You don't need a prescription for most common drugs in Thailand just go to a bigger Pharmacy and show them the box for what you currently taking and the sell you the same one or and equivalent medication. I live in the Silom Area and use the Pharmacy's opposite Chulalongkorn Hospital in Rama 4. there 5 or 6 Pharmacies in that area so if one does have what you need just go to the next one. I think you will pay 450-500 Baht for the blood pressure Medication. 2

edwardflory
I have been using THAI MILITARY hospitals for 9+ years. Most military dotcors are US or UK trained. My latest prescriptions ( 4 months 1@2x daily and 1@1xs daily ) and including Doctors visit and lab work was 1,200THB. In the US, 1 MONTHLY prescription with co-pay was $29.00US. When it comes to health, why not visit a MILITARY hospitals .. clinic ..for a checkup. HINT: you have to register 1st and get a (( FREE )) hospital ID card, passport needed You pay the same price Thai civilian's pay. I spent 5 days in a ARMY hospital, 4 days xrays, 5 days lab, discharged with 4 months meds. Paid about the same as a 5 day stay at a decent downtown hotel, 12,000THB Edited February 22, 2023 by edwardflory spelling

ignis
Pill cutters are very cheap from the Pharmacy [paid 25 baht a few years ago] I say this because often it appears pill are all the same price no matter what mg. my BP pills are 'Prenolol' 25mg mornings [Atenolol] they cost the same price as 50mg pills, so it works out a lot cheaper to cut them in halve the same with 'Losartan' 50 mg evenings I have the 100 mg and cut in halve 1

However, you said you are taking "Amlodipine", right? If so, this medicine is available only with a doctor's prescription. Yes, there are other "over-the-counter" drugs, but Amlodipine is considered the best for what it does. So yes, you will have to go and see a doctor, but let the doctor know that when you need a refill, you don't want to see a doctor again, just be able to come back for a refill only. I obtained the above info by googling Amlodipine in Thailand and everywhere I read it said prescription only. Nope...he will "not" need a prescription for Amlopine nor most any other type of blood pressure medicine in Thailand. 2

Iron Tongue
In Thailand, pretty much all health maintenance drugs are available OTC. I would just suggest that you stick with the bigger pharmacy chains like Boots or Watsons. Counterfeit items don't just stop at watches and handbags.

Boots and Watsons in Thailand sell mainly cosmetics and their pharmacy counters have only a very small range of drugs and usually expensive imports. Better to use a real Thai pharmacy. While counterfeits are an issue for certain prescription on;y drugs with special appeal to expats (e.g. benzos, ED drugs) they are NOT an issue for common medications like this. Especially nto for locally made generics - no profit margin in them. But you won't find them at a Boots or Watsons. I recommend buying one of the many locally made brands of amlodopine. These are dirt cheap and absolutely no one would have any reason to counterfeit them. In Bangkok many expats like the South East pharmacy on Sukhumivt between Sois 11 -1 3. 5 1

Unless they are out of stock. There really are no such things as prescriptions in Thailand. Lots of normally prescribed drugs in western countries are available in most pharmacies. Some drugs are controlled though and you can only get them from hospitals, which means having to see a doctor there. I would also add that pharmacies will sell locally produced and imported versions of the same drug. Edited February 22, 2023 by rwill
