I am shortly due to exit thailand to cancel current O-A extension and do border bounce for a 30 day visa exempt to change to O based on retirement at my local immigration office.Question is, will they want to see 20,000 baht cash in my pocket.

If anyone can answer this I would be grateful.

Although rarely asked for that is the law (or equivalent in foreign currency - although not sure why 20K keeps getting quoted as it's 10K for single, 20K for family) so a pretty dumb move not to have it on the off-chance you are asked to show it.

Have done it twice never been asked, but as said by another poster good advice to have it just in case, I used the Cambodian border, just make sure that you do not have a reentry permit

45 days not 30 until end of the month, pong nam ron/ban pakkard would be my choice, unless your north or south Thailand, flying is easy
