I would think he could claim  political asylum as he is from Iraq but there again this is Thailand I don’t think they know the meaning the guy should have headed to France paid his dues and landed on the shores of Dover

This case, and I guess a zillion others, just shows that Thai immigration needs a massive shake-up.

Immigration spends hours on daft stuff paperwork for nothing, 90 day reports etc, yet they cannot keep track of the info in all that paperwork.

 

Farangy's that have been married here for many years must be treated like children every year with nonsense paperwork, crazy stuff.

 

Their time would be better spent looking out for the real dodgers, which they don't, they rely on folk grassing-up for a few bahts.....

If he ever did have a tourist visa, it  was well expired and irrelevant. I expect we can simply say he was on overstay......perhaps even had an expired passport.

If the guy entered legally all those years ago almost certainly it would have been as a tourist. He never would have started with the TM30 or 90-day reporting regime, so likely was not recorded anywhere. I don't know if Thailand compares arrival and departure records to pick up overstayers, I would guess not.

 

If you keep a low profile and are supported by somebody (wife), as this character apparently did, you could stay off the radar for a long time.

However, there are always some people who will report somebody they dislike for any of a thousand reasons. The dob-in is a major way long term overstayers get caught, despite agencies here claiming it's because of their sterling work. 

Foreigners are disliked by many locals and can stand out in Thailand.

Don't like this guy's future, I can understand his distress at getting caught. He probably has little money, no passport, no prospect now of being picked up as a refugee by a western country and has a bleak future if returning to Iraq.

This fellow must have been rich when he arrived in Thailand or how else did he stay in the

country for so long.  A follow up story may be quite interesting to read.  52 years old and

able to not work but able to stay in a foreign country for 8 whole years.  Interesting.

Personally I don't mind my taxes going to help people, and not to rich corporations or the mega wealthy. But then again, I am not stupid enough to believe the claptrap the press say about asylum seekers. I mean, you do know they can and do work once processed, right? Good job immigration, now hunt down all the riff raff who use agents to stay here illegally, this country wants quality expats with the required funds in their own bank account, not the cheap charlie pot noodle balloon chasing wife beating vest brigade.

He should have done that when arriving. Now he committed a crime and won't be able to anymore.
