They would only take cash from me and told me I could not pay with my credit card but there is a bank at Regent house so you can use the hole in the wall.

You need to pay by banker's draft. The best thing to do is to buy one for the value of 36,000 Baht (per application) at the bank at Regency House where you will be applying for the visa. They know exactly what you need and it doesn't take very long.

I tried a couple of other banks the day before my wife and family applied (thinking I would save time at the application centre), and I was given quite a run around.

Fees should be paid in baht in the form of Banker' draft only, made payable to the "British Embassy, Bangkok". One Banker' draft per applicant

The other guys are correct it does say bankers draft only on the new website, so that's what you'd better get, I paid with cash that I got from the ATM at the bank downstairs when I was there in late May but they have changed things now by the look of it. Just make sure the bank is open when you are due to be there, it should be though.
