New airport is unsafe, checks below par, says IATA report

Suvarnabhumi airport is unsafe with checks on people and their belongings in the passenger terminal falling below standard, says the International Air Transport Association. IATA's safety study of the airport found that standards are inferior to those of Don Mueang airport. The study aimed at maintaining security standards at international airports will be tabled for discussion by AoT board members today. The report found there are many spots in the passenger terminal where checked passengers can meet people who have not passed through security, from whom they can receive unchecked parcels or objects and then carry them on board aircraft. AoT must take stricter precautions in issuing temporary passes for access to restricted areas in the terminal and more thoroughly check visiting vehicles, according to the study. IATA represents the commercial airline industry with 250 member airlines. The institute conducted an initial fire risk survey and recommended that AoT clear fire escapes blocked by shops and piles of goods.

If ou read the bits about the lack of segregation between security screened passengers and non-screened it's a little scary particularly if you are on a UK or USA bound flight.

Those soft spots include checkpoints D and G where checked people and outsiders are separated by one-metre-high glass partitions.

Transit passenger lounges are not completely sealed because there is space between the glass partitions through which objects can be passed.

what a comforting thought! while they are checking my notebook, aftershave and hair gel - a few feet away guns, bombs and knives are being passed around like candy at a market festival.... :o

Well maybe less than that as it could well sink back into the swamp before a generation has passed...

Indeed it may well. Or it could also just "crack" apart to the point of inoperability.

Perhaps if the Generals didn't up their budget 26% to pay for their new villas along the coast the government would have a bit of money go fix the minor irregularities at the airport. Oh, that's right, they own Don Muang. Why would they plow money into that new one?

Hey, I've used the airport and it's far easier to deal with than the "minor irregularities" at Los Angeles International Airport. Some of us aren't so lucky to have experienced the amazing trouble free airports like in your hometown. You should feel very lucky.

Yup. Also the education hub, IT hub, Tourism hub etc.

Yup. But Thais won't be embarrassed, they simply blame the foreign consultants (as reported in the Nation)

Normally I would rush to agree and put a few well-aimed kicks at Thaksins odious head. But in this case it isnt Thaksins fault, though the pervasive corruption certainly is. Design execution and incompetent management are the causes of most of the problems at Suva.

Thais haven't yet discovered the difference between talking the talk and walking the walk. For the Thai, to say it is sufficient, no need to actually do it, with the result that everything they touch turns to shit. They can't even lay a flat road, so airports and (wait for it...) nuclear power stations, are downright alarming.

I am not really surprised by this news.Safety in general isn't much of an item in Thailand. You will see people welding without eyeprotection, etc. So,the mentality has to change, and the gouvernment should finally start thinking global.

And that's WHY Thailand IS much safer ,than the rest of the world ! If you place warrnings on everycorner, it doesn't makes place safer, only makes people dumber ! Good old days, when inspite the terrorists u could carry swiss knifes/ liquids/ etc. on board , and nothing bad was happening !! THE ONLY GOAL of terror is to disrupt & frighten ! And the biggest winner is the UK ! Nothing gives more victorious delight to the terrorists than to see how miserable the life of general populace become , tube & heathrow best examples. Terrorists bomb to attract attention, and if the nation ignores/forgets & gets back to NORMAL pace of life in a few days , terrorists LOSE, and generally Danger Dissapears !
