PTT and Saudi Company to Invest in Green Hydrogen

BANGKOK (NNT) - Thai oil and gas conglomerate PTT Group plans to invest US$7 billion in producing "green" hydrogen with ACWA Power, Saudi Arabia’s leading renewable energy business, with the goal of powering electric vehicles in Southeast Asia.

 

PTT CEO Auttapol Rerkpiboon said the project aims to build a plant in Thailand with a production capacity of 225,000 tons of hydrogen per year. The two companies, together with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), signed a Memorandum of Understanding in November to go forward with the project and the $7 billion investment pledge is a step toward that goal.

 

The PTT CEO said the project aims to promote green hydrogen as a future energy source to generate demand and lead to economies of scale, propelling Thailand to become the green energy supplier in ASEAN.

 

Renewable green hydrogen is produced via water electrolysis and stored until it is utilized to power automobiles and industrial machinery. Green hydrogen, as opposed to "brown" and "gray" hydrogen, is produced entirely from renewable energy sources, which generates zero emissions as a result.

 

PTT has pledged to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, with this investment being one of many different approaches to finding an equilibrium between reducing emissions and remaining profitable. PTT’s net-zero strategy also aligns with the Thai government’s goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065.

If hydrogen is produced from coal or natural gas that created green house emissions, what's the point? Might as well use grid electricity for power. Apart from such hydrogen production is expensive as is resupply and practical use.

Suggest you study the 3 processes under consideration for H2 production, and then have another go at commenting. UK pm Boris also was caught out when asked where the electricity foe EV's would come from his answer "from the plug" .

How does the PTT intend to power their H2 production plant. Via solar generated electricity?

The movement and exploration and experimentation in non fossil fuels is as in all of mans recorded history of R&D and usage of all inventions and discoveries just another phase and challenge on the existential continuum of our existence on this planet.

 

We burnt whale oil for lights then gaslight then electricity, we had slow clunky steam cars, and trains burning wood and coal, then internal combustion came along with Daimler Benz. We plowed behind horse and oxen, then with steam fields were plowed.

 

If we don't develop non-polluting systems of energy e.g fusion and the capacity to contain it in very small, mobile and safe power plants then we will continue to pollute the world in which we live and be restricted, yes restricted by the use of fossil fuels when the very real possibility of free, limitless power e.g. the awesome power that gives us stars like our Sun will never be realised.

 

If we don't find materials other than oil, and other toxic substances such as plastics, we will literally choke the life from the natural world.

The debate about global warning is irrelevant to me insofar as we are drowning in all forms of man made synthetic pollutants. To sustain ourselves we need to find alternative cleaner energies. 

 

Some thinkers say our very capitalist structure of consume more and more, the progression of the 'industrial age' with centralisation of industry with the move away from smaller dispersed habitation and manufacture, will fail, and is in fact showing us in multiple indicators how it is less than optimal and in some indicators is indeed failing us now.

What else could be zero emission?

Same like the rich Arab countries that plaster the desert with cheap solar cells and produce electricity for about 1 Eurocent/kWh.

With the enormous amount of solar energy available the low efficiency of electrolysis can be neglected.

As long as those in control are making huge profits from fossil fuels, nothing will change.

 

It's a very very slow works in progress.   Way to slow to ward off what GW/CC folks are predicting will happen if common sense isn't used soon.

 

But then, the people yelling the loudest, aren't using solar at home or driving EVs either.

Yea right ,How are they producing this Hydrogen? with dirty coal power  Electricity?

They say Clean power ,Yes the Hydrogen is clean but Not the Production of this Hydrogen.

Big Scam ,Same as EV's  Dirty Electricity. Dirty mining to get the products for the dirty Batteries, ,dirty battery waste after use.

When are people going to wakes up  and see that All this is a scam to make money.

The good old combustion engine is the cleanest one off the lot , There's so much oil for them to burn that we can run them for an other few hundred years.
