Safety issues in Thailand?

Roads are not dangerous - drivers are.

Both are dangerous, but the drivers are probably more.

I say both because I have personally been on a nice paved road and all of a sudden it has a 1 meter deep hole running entirely across it and not a single warning. Likewise I see a traffic light that has a right green arrow going in one direction and at the same time a straight green arrow can be seen in the opposite direction. Debris like sand and loose gravel all along the road sides where scooters are supposed to be.

......and don't get me started on the roads that have deep trenches on the left lane caused by all trucks passing through. They are big enough to swallow a small car.

Those mentioned are major incidents.
Nothing to worry about.  Just be careful of drivers running you over trying to cross the street.  Even though you  are in a crosswalk.  Or the the light is green for you to cross.  It will be your fault for just being there. Or maybe brake failure according to the driver.
If you have an issue with a local.  Don’t worry about ten locals attacking you.  Especially if it was just a verbal disagreement.  You should be fine.  It’s just a normal cultural thing.  No biggie.   If it involves a neighbor just keep moving away for your own safety.  Because if it’s such as a  noise issue.  If you try to talking to the person.  You might put yourself in jeopardy.

Unfortunately not everyone lives in a remote village.  Or wants to.. Not saying incidents can’t happen there.
And I have found a large percentage of the people that downplay common dangers in Thailand.   For the most part dislike and couldn’t make it in their own countries.  So they turn a blind eye.

These people would rather talk about a random British tourist having a minor temper tantrum than face the reality that if they have an issue with a local the vast majority of them don't have many recourse options.

Rabies had a peak in 17 and 18, and now back to normal with 2 leathal cases in 20. The last 5 years they have carried out a vaccination program that seems to work well.

  • 5 months later...

Guess it's time to revive this unfortunate topic...

At least the kidsy was snatched quickly

????

Massacres at kindergarten, shootings at malls in Nakhon Ratchasima, 14 year old kiddies shooting in Bangkok...

It starts to have a bit similarities to USA, at least not so many school shootings here yet...

Maybe as a start they should prohibit private gun ownership for good measure and confiscate existing stock in private hands plus control handling of weapons by off-duty officers?p

Statistics have a way of skewing reality.

remove from statistics those parts you do nor engage in and for you, the picture is entirely different.

For instance "Thailand has a very high motor vehicle  accident fatality rate "

But Thailand has more motorbike than any other part of the world. and  most of the motor vehicle  accident fatalities , and serious hospitalizations are of motorbike riders. So, if you do not often ride on motorbikes.........
