Siam Rath reported that a musician called Phlakorn and his girlfriend Jariyaporn went to the Muang Ratchaburi police after their brand new car was vandalized in the parking lot outside a restaurant.

Phlakorn was doing a gig at the restaurant that was packed for Songkran.

They had to park in front of other vehicles a little so they left a note on the windshield with a phone number if someone needed them to move their Mazda 3.

Instead they emerged after the gig to find some hefty boot marks on the side of the vehicle.

They didn't know how to leave the car in netutral because it was new so they left the brake on.

A witness said they saw an angry tall man with a short woman making a fuss at the scene.

Investigations continue.

Didn't know how to put the car in neutral!!!???

I don't think that he deserved the kicking, but what a numpty!

I have same model, but 2014... and honestly since it's my first automatic car I owned, I was not sure how to do it either when I just got it, though I wasn't bothered by it since I didn't need it. If I needed it, I would've figured it out. My gf told me later. She was in the situation where she needed it before me.

It's obvious how you do it with manual cars, but it's not the same with automatics...and different model handle it differently.

Are you Thai? It's inconceivable to me that you can own a car and not know how to put it in Neutral.

Blocking someone in and then not leaving the car in neutral is a crime against humanity, if you don't know how to engage neutral, then don't block in. Simple!

Did they leave their note on the windscreen of the blocked-in car(s) or their own?

I know exactly how the owner of the boot prints felt, although I wouldn't be using my UK size 11s on the car.

Anyone who deliberately blocks anyone in deserves all they get, what if the person being blocked in has a family emergency? Do they have to start phoning people and waiting around?

They should never have blocked anyone in, no excuses.

Parking as close as he could to the entrance probably. The two common traits you see here, firstly, I am very important, secondly, parking as close as you can to your destination in order to avoid the terrible activity of actually walking a few yards.

All the automatics that I  have driven usually have some version of the gears marked alongside the gear stick along the lines of D1-D2-D-N-R-P, with N being Neutral.

They also (usually) have a means to avoid you leaving the car parked when in neutral. For example, our Mu-X will chime annoyingly if you stop the engine in anything other than P, if you ignore that you'll find you can't lock the doors (ours is keyless but many others will prevent you removing the ignition key when not in P).

Luckily, the bypass for all this is simple, stop the engine when in P, press the "shift lock" button (next to the shift lever) and move the lever to N. Then the car knows you are acting deliberately and will let you leave.

Most autos are similar although many don't have the clearly marked Shift-Lock button and you have to poke the key down a hole (look near the shift lever for a blanking plate to remove). There are certainly some that don't have a simple method to leave in neutral.

EV owners, can you leave your car in "neutral" with the brakes off?
