At worst, they'll be pardoned and all swept under the rug and forgotten.

I don't think Thaksin's supporters will stand quietly by if he goes to prison. Maybe protests and riots, then of course the military would have a perfect excuse to stage yet another coup and return Prayut to power, to restore law and order ....NOT!!
