PHUKET (NNT) - Phuket authorities have initiated a project to control the monkey population in the island province in order to reduce monkey attacks and the risk of diseases that can be transmitted from monkeys to humans.

Pongchart Chueahom, head of the Khao Phra Taeo Natural and Wildlife Center in Phuket’s Thalang district, disclosed that the project aims to sterilize around 500 monkeys in different locations. The project is part of efforts to curb the rising monkey population that could pose a threat to local residents and tourists on the island.

The head of the wildlife center stressed the importance of addressing the situation, citing increasing frequency of confrontations between monkeys and tourists as well as local residents, as more monkeys venture into residential areas.

Pongchart also expressed concern for public health security as some diseases can be transmitted from monkeys to humans.

He has advised guests who came across monkeys in resorts and hotels not to feed them because this would encourage undesired behavior, which could lead to disturbances and unwanted incidents.

The problem is the locals who make a living selling snacks to tourists who in turn feed the monkeys.... cut that out and the monkeys will push-off in search of natural food.
